.22LR Match / Target Ammunition

The boys at Target Shooting Products are great. Just by the Center X and call it a day. Rifle Match and Standard Plus are cheaper and I haven't seen a rifle that didn't like them. If they don't shoot well enough then just sort the rounds. $5.50 per 50 for the Standard Plus, it shoots better than anything else I've put through it for that price.

I've got some of it coming! Along with Center x, Eley Club, Match EPS (ouch), RWS Special Match, Rifle Match, Target, and Eley Team (which I picked up 100 last night for some fun over the weekend)

Might go to the range this week to try it out, in which case I'll need to buy more Eley Team (all they have).

Also picked up the Harris adaptor to make my bipod fit it's rail. Got a swivel type for my .308 which I've been meaning to pick up and finally saw it in stock.

Only accurate rifles are interesting (well for the most part). And with the 22's, it seems to all come down to what you're feeding it (with the bolts anyways). It hurt a little when I paid for my first brick of the good stuff, but one day at the range and I can tell you I had no buyers remorse. I've settled on the Lapua Standard or Rifle Match with a bit of Center - X mixed in. The beautiful thing about these rounds is the point of aim is almost exactly the same. So if I want to bang on the steel targets at 100 then I'll use the Standard, and if I want to punch paper, or practise for the big guns then I'll switch to the good stuff. i really never knew how good I could shoot until I got behind the trigger of that rifle with good ammunition in it. This has helped me a ton with the larger rifles as now I can finally answer the question "is it me, or the rifle?".

Enjoy those rounds and remember, its still a hell of a lot cheaper than even the cheapest of centerfire.

"...high end match ammunition..." You'll have to buy a box of as many brands as you can and try 'em all. And not only match ammo. Some of it will not cycle the action of a target pistol, even a Vostok.

It depends on the firearm but generally speaking, Centre-X easily outshoots Rifle Match and Standard Plus even if they are sorted. It is just that much better !

I never said it wasn't, but at over twice the price I hope it would. Center-X shoots tighter in my savage but half inch groups with unsorted standard plus is a better deal at less than half the price. Same point of impact as the center-x, so mixing it up ain't a pain in the ass

A couple caveats on testing different ammo in a rifle.

First, to do it right you should clean the bore between types of ammo. I have found a boresnake does this quickly and well.

Second, it may take at Least 40-50 rounds with a new type of ammo to season the bore and have it settle down before you get a true representation of how that particular ammo shoots in your rifle. I see guys trying one 50 round box of ammo; in my experience that's not enough to truly test that ammo.

I shoot a lot of rimfire, and what Rick says here is generally correct. [except I prefer not to use the boresnake. (sorry Rick!) :)]

My true competition rifles are quite fussy when it comes to the very BEST ammo, but when you find a lot they like...pure rapture!

Last time I ordered from Peter at TSP, it was a couple of cases of one lot of ELEY Match EPS. Costly, but worth it, since it is best in 2 target 22's.

I have had stellar results with several different ammos in different 22's, but it seems that to get consistent results, you must pay the price.

Regards, Dave

Try to pick up some SK Standard (excellent mid priced ammo) and some Lapua CenterX. These have both shot extremely well from my Sako's and Anschutz's.
I have used Standard Plus extensively and have recently tried out SK Rifle Match. Rifle Match is my brick purchase order these days. When I lived in NS, I bought from Peter just a short drive away.
Since I now live in Cold Lake, I now purchase my SK ammo through Prophet River, who gets thier orders through Peter.

Very mild truth in your post sunray. I think it's more correct to say, that those with higher end target pistols/rifles tend to stear themselves towards match ammunition, loaded at prescribed velocities, that fit snuggly into match grade chambers, that often produce winning results on the scoreboard. For a great example, just attend or just even observe an ISSF sanctioned rimfire pistol or rifle match for yourself. Then take efforts to see what the serious shooters are using on the firing line to win or place very well in their individual scores. I guarantee you, that you will be better informed at the end of the day.
