Hi,
does anyone ever sandblast a rifle just before slow rust blue? I want to do a bolt action rifle with slow rust blue and I'm wondering if it will look good just sandblasting without further polishing.
Maybe aluminium oxide 180 grit? or finer? glassbead??

Any opinion or maybe pics?

Thanks

You need to be very careful when doing that. Not because of the finish, which is nice and will definitely last a long time but because the air from the compressor, may contain airline oil. This means you will have to completely clean the surfaces all over again.

If they filter their air, it should be good to go.

In what size should I look for?

been end a long time since I bought the bag of glass, I recall it being labelled as "medium", the beads being about 50-60 thou in size. As glass is used the beads shatter and become finer, so depending on reservoir size they can reduce quickly especially with higher pressure so experiment till you get a pleasing result.

cheers

Even when the metal has been polished to 320 or 400 grit, slow rust blue will result in more of a matte finish than a high shine finish. It depends on the chemical used, duration of rust phase, number of rust/boil/card cycles, etc. When I get up to 6-7 cycles, I find the blue is much more matte than after 2-3 cycles.

Aluminum oxide or glass bead even corn husk for blasting never sand. Sand is for hv equip where pitting doesn't matter
