Purchasing a restricted firearm?

Waiting on my "issued" RPAL in the mail and I was wondering if someone could help clarify a couple of things. Do I need to be a member of a club already to purchase a restricted firearm (I know you can't shoot without being a member)? If no, then how does it work in respect to buying from say Wolverine Supplies or from someone direct like Target Sport Canada? More specifically if I can buy how does arrangement of the ATT work? Do I set it up the paperwork before I go there (say TSC) or is it done on the spot? I guess the same question would apply to online purchases. Someone told me a while back that a temporary ATT is issued that is essentially void once the firearm reaches your house.

I'm currently doing searches, and I apologize if this question has been asked before.

You can purchase a restricted without being a club member but the CFO likely won't complete the transfer or issue an ATT before you do. The temporary ATT to get the gun home is applied for after the purchase. Some shops will phone it in for you, at others you do it yourself. Depending where you live and when you call, you could get the ATT right away, same day, next day, etc... And yes it is only good to get home during a short window of time.

In Ontario you can purchase a restricted without being a member. I know this as I have done the same. I purchased 4 restricted all handguns with no club membership, I think after you own 4 the CFO will then require a club membership to complete the registration.

Where are you? It makes a difference.
"...temporary ATT..." Yep. That one is just to get your property home. Nothing new about it. It's been like this for eons. Used to be, in TO, that you had to take the sale receipt to the cops, get the conveyance permit, go back to the shop to get the firearm, then back to the cops to show 'em the piece, thence to your home.
"...with no club membership..." You tell 'em you're a collector? Ontario usually requires a club membership to do a transfer.

Trust me bud you do not need a club membership to buy a restricted. You can go into a firearms store (in my case Ontario) and ask them. That's what I did. You can own a certain number of restricted only without a club membership.

Ya I was there last weekend and truthfully almost walked out purchasing a Glock 17. It was somewhat intimidating at first but once they knew I was serious and knew basic things about the firearms I was interested in, they were really helpful. Talked to Alex. Will probably finalize things by end of October after doing some more research. Have no other reason, not to purchase my firearm there. Now as a newbie 9mm vs 40 cal? Thoughts?!?!

I have a Glock in 9 and in 40. I find them both to be equally "snappy". They are a lightweight creature, so you feel a lot more than some of the heavier metal constructed firearms.

With that said, I had a 40 (Glock 22) as one of my first pistols.

Do you have the opportunity to go and shoot one before buying? Never a bad thing. I'm not certain if Target Sports in Gormley has a selection of Glocks?(To test at the range)

All the best either way!

ITB.

I don't know who you know in the CFO but you CAN'T register a restricted firearm in Ontario unless you are either a member of a club OR apply to so by submitting an "Application For Transfer Approval For Restricted Firearms/Prohibited Handguns For The Purpose Of Forming Part Of A Gun Collection." This IS the requirement of the CFO for Ontario. This document isn't available online for downloading. You must call the CFO and they will mail it to you.

He doesn't know anyone at the CFO ,, neither do I.... I just purchased a restricted hand gun ,, paid my money. The store , completed the STATT ( short term ATT ) request online with the CFO , and called me the next day to pick it up. Now i picked it up, went home.
Now in order to shoot it. I must become a member of a club, and then they will request an ATT for me for travel back and forth to the range and home..

We'll it looks like the Ont. CFO has changed it's rules concerning your initial acquisition of a restricted firearm. Frankly, I think the rules change far to often. It's unfortunate that there aren't universal set of rules for all of the Provinces to adhere to.

So what's the final word? Can you still order a restricted firearm online and have it sent directly to your home without having a club membership or did they change the rules again?

As a end note to this. Ended up purchasing a Glock 17 from Al Flaherty's on Friday. Pretty painless and I was called on Monday to inform me that my firearm was registered and STATT issued and I could come pick it up at anytime. Joined Silverdale on Saturday and registered for their ATT level course on November 16th with first probationary shoot then. 2 more of those post course and application for LTATT so I should be shooting my baby in ummmm 2014. Now off to buy a safe and a case so I can bring my baby home on Friday. Is it just odd to name your first firearm?!?!

With this long of a wait, I may just have to pick up a non-restricted to play around with. Any recommendations? I was thinking an SKS since I already plopped down a few bills with the Glock and membership

Another Newbie here:

I was hoping someone could break down the purchase of a restricted firearm and the transport needs. I.E: let say I buy a restricted firearm, whats the next steps. What are the steps to get the short term ATT what are the steps for a long term ATT? whats the difference between buying from another person vs. from a shop?

I am in Alberta BTW, if it matters.

Sounds like this is your first restricted firearm. Congrats on buying a Glock. That was my first as well. I know you'll enjoy it....
