I just received my hunting permit and don't really know what to look for when scouting crown land or contacting people on farmland. I've done some scouting on crown land near Winchester and only found lots of ATVs. I am willing to try any type of hunting on any small game and large game. I'm particularly intrigued in hunting deer, moose, bear and coyote. I own rifles in .223 and .308. Any tips on crown land areas or strategies for asking property owners would be appreciated. Thank you!

Get the City of Ottawa map showing the open hunting zones from their website... Get in your car... Drive around early and late in the day scouting... Get out of your car and knock on some doors... Dress neatly, but not flashy, introduce yourself first and then get right to the point, don't waste their time. Tell the that you are an ethical sportsman and will respect their property. If you get permission, ask where you should park, where their property boundaries are, any areas where you "should not" go. If you get turned down, thank them for their time and ask if they know of any neighbors that may be looking for hunters to cull animals or waterfowl... Keep moving and keep knocking... I guaranty that you will be successful.

This... And dress nicely and shave... Don't show up in your camo or blaze... If you are too shy to knock doors then draft a respectful letter asking for permission stating that you will pay a small fee or do chores... You'd be surprised how many permissions I have gotten just from volunteering a day of sawing and chopping firewood...

I got a map of the crown land for eastern Ontario and really enjoy scouting around new lands but it's hard on gas money and time. I'll keep at it though and knock on some doors. Thanks for the advice.

I just acquired 60 acres to hunt on close to the city by asking around. I've asked him if he needs a hand doing anything around his property but he won't accept any offer and he wants to introduce me to his nieghbour who has 400 acres abutting his property on top of that...I feel guilty not doing anything in return.

Wow, what a great find. I would feel guilty too. Give him half your harvests or get him a present eventually I guess. What are you going to be hunting there? If you're looking for someone to hunt with... I would be very interested. :)

Offering to help with firewood is a good idea. I'll get to it! I hope they don't mind my lumberjack beard though. Thanks!

They never mind mine which grows from october through november... Just approach them as if you are making a friend and go from there.. Once you harvest something you will be on better ground... I like to show up with some smoked venison sausage or salami and crackers etc... My deer spots re set but its nice to gwt new turkey and yote locations...

Truly speaking, I love sawing and chopping wood, while they may see it as a chore I see it as exercise and fresh air that helps me get in shape and prep for the season...

I have over 400 acres of permissions 45 minutes south of you, if you are truly stuck let me know...

Thanks! I'm a beginner so I'm not sure if I'm the person to be taking guest out hunting and the landowner seems a bit reserved and told me not too bring anyone else due to "liability reasons" but Superbrad just mentioned he had some property available and is experienced.

I plan on just hunting lot's of coyotes, turkey's and deer for now since that's all I have gear for and I can't just justify spending anymore money for now. I offered to share my harvest but he just shroud it off like it didn't matter. So come harvest time I'll just drop it off when only his wife is home.

Hmmm salami... I need to learn how to make that.

Nice! Thanks for the offer, I might just take you up on it. It would really mean a lot if I don't find anything soon. If I take you up on the offer and you have any chores to be done, consider them done. I will continue scouting around crown land for now because it's half the fun for me. I just wish I had more time to go between school/work and more money for gas.

I hear you on the spending, it gets expensive fast... Good luck on your hunts and be safe.

Well - There is a lot more crown land, and a lot less population if you go toward Renfrew.

Renfrew Is a better option then going to the south of Ottawa as I've been doing. There's just so much crown land that I'd like to save some gas money and time by getting some more specifics before I go out there. Hard to do when it's normal for a hunter to be protective of their favorite spots. Thanks
