My hunting buddy dropped off a Model 12 that has a serious problem. Load up the magazine and cycle the action and the gun fires on its own. Any suggestions on what to look for? Already had it to the only gunsmith around who charged him 150 bucks and said it was fixed. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Check and see if the trigger is returning to its original position after firing. The 12 will fire if the trigger is held back and the pump is cycled. When the pump hits the forward stop, bang. HTH, Cheers

My money is on what BMcCarron said. The model 12 lacks a trigger disconnector, which allows it to "slam fire" by holding down the trigger and pumping. I would imagine that something in the trigger is preventing it from resetting. Or possibly the firing pin has just gotten stuck protruding forwards.

I want a model 12, but I can never find one when I have money.

Let me know when you have money I have 5 of them stashed away ;)

The vast majority of well used model 12's are 'worn out'. You need to have it looked at by a reputable smith who knows model 12's and can point out to you want is actually wrong... why it is not functioning correctly... they should not fire unless the trigger is held in the fire position... and they should not fire until the breech bolt is fully locked up... do it slowly with no ammunition and many that are worn will fire when the breech bolt is still 'open'.

I suppose it's worth asking here, is there any availability of replacement parts for the Model 12? I'd really like to get one as my backpacking/hiking/do-most-stuff shotgun, and I'd like to feel confident that it's not going to be put out of commission because a particular part hasn't been produced since the 60s or something.

The only gunsmith we have here says its fixed.

I will just have to condemn the gun. I do not trust the gunsmith he brought it to. Not to mention the only answer you can get from him is a grunt.

EDIT* I just noticed that the last 3/8 inch of the pump slide that operates the bolt is broken off. I am pretty sure this is the problem. The gun looks to have very little use otherwise.

Still worth $$ as a parts gun
