Jewelling?

It is quite simple to do yourself on a 99 bolt. All you need is a drill press and some grid paper (mine is laminated) to get your spacing even. Cratex abrasive sticks are available at KBC Tools and they work much better than valve grinding compound (shown in the photo below)

A 1/4" cratex stick can be held in a soapstone holder (available at any welding supplier).

All that being said, if you don't want to try it yourself and you can't find anyone local you are welcome to send me a PM.

jewling a bolt is a tedious job. i am truly amazed gunsmiths dont charge more to do it.

i have done it on a mill. easy that way, 1/2 turn on the cross feed and you get a nice pattern on the bolt. just takes a while, and generally a break half way through to get your eyes to focus again.

How do you remove the bolt? I'm not a gunsmith but I've been a carpenter for thirty years so I am fimilar with tools. My uncle who lives next door has a mill and a lathe.

I'll give it a try on one or two of my bolts possibly over the winter. There are a few how to videos available on how to do it.

"...quite simple to do..." If you have the equipment. In any case, you'll drop the value by half. 99's are rapidly becoming collector pieces.
"...Supposedly helps keep lubrication..." Nope. Purely decorative.
"...How do you remove the bolt?..." If you don't know how to do that, you're better to leave it alone. And being a carpenter isn't going to matter.

It creates a surface that will hold a fine film of oil much better than a polished surface. It also known as engine turning, ignore sunray, once again he speaks without knowledge.

Not worried about the value. I just had the rifle completely redone. The original had a jewelled bolt but the smith that refinished it wasn't interested in jewelling it.
Also, if I didn't do something just because I had to ask questions I wouldn't do much of anything.

Even though I'm a carpenter there's a lot of things I haven't done. I've never built a set of interior finished stairs. I ask a lot of questions and just finished these in my own home. I think they turned out rather well.

Also here's a pic of a portable hydraulic saw mill my uncle built from scratch as well as a small log loader for an ATV. He's one of the most talented guy's I know. He's a pretty good artist, sculpture, he can play almost any instrument very well by ear, machinist, carpenter, mechanic and amateur gunsmith. Between the two of us, well getter done!

I may not decide to do the job myself but I can guarantee you that if I do it will be done well.
