taking a white tail with a 22-250

The fact that something has been done does not make it a good idea.

I have believed for a long time that the proper tool for the job is always the smartest choice. You can shingle a roof with a tack hammer if you are determined to do so, but I don't know anyone who would deliberately make that choice. There are just so many more appropriate tools for deer hunting that I cannot fathom why anyone would choose a .22 center fire of any type. There is no "meat damage" argument that can be made in its favor. There is no "killing effectiveness" that can be made in its favor. There ARE lots of "conditions" (like proper bullet, placement, shot angles, range) that everyone keeps mentioning when using any .22 center fire on deer. If I had in my hand a .22-250, I would have no doubt that I could, if I wanted to, kill a deer with it. If I was getting ready to go deer hunting I would never pick up the .22-250 if my .270 was nearby. Why would anyone?

For much the same reasons, I do not understand people who think they need a .375 H&H to hunt elk. If I want to hang a picture, I don't get the sledge hammer out of the garage.

Just an old guy who doesn't find the extreme ends of the bell curves to be much use.

I've taken quite a few deer with my 22250 over the last few years. Most went down inside 30 yards. I took a Doe last year at 250+ yards it ran maybe 20 yards and dropped. I took a big bodied 6x6 buck the year before beyond 300 yards it bowled over on the spot. I'm no sniper, but it's definitely shot placement. I probably don't need a 7mm to shoot deer on a couple thousand acres backyard farmland, unless I'm trying my hand beyond 400 yards.its probably not the best tool for the job, but it definitely gets it done, and is nice and flat shooting.

Proper bullet, proper placement.
Too bad that a lot of folks miss the "proper bullet" portion of that statement and run down to CDN Tire to load up with lightweight varmint bullets for the task.

Therein lay the biggest problem with shooting deer with a 22 cal centrefire.

.303 comes to mind........just sayin

I can remember when 303 was the norm for moose... And 30-06 was considered the new super gun.. Now some people think its not big enough. And that wasn't that long ago. If you put a hole in something(vital area) its going to die.

You know, everyone and their dog flogs the 303 as being the quintessential Canadian rifle.... In 35+ years of hunting, I've neveronce encountered anyone who is hunting with a 303. And ever since I was a little kid, I've asked.

You're not hunting in the right places! Everyone and their dog used one around here when I was a kid and I carried a No.4 into the woods on my first deer hunt. The old man still keeps two around and I've got three in the basement. :)

And now back to 22-250's on deer.
