Hey Fella's well just like the rest of you I love my guns. I currently have 2 "moose"guns that I thought about selling and just getting 1 to replace them with. I have a Ruger Hawkeye SS 35 Whelen and a 375 Ruger SS Alaskan. Both shoot great and both are set in Mcmillan stocks. I like my guns short and handy for brush work but want something that can reach out and hammer a moose at 3-400yds.(even though 200yds or less is more likely) I'm thinking of something a little more "refined" and was thinking of a Sako bear hunter or Kodiak in .338 or 375 H&H or ??. I have nothing against the guns I have, but the problem with being a gun nut is just want to get something different to hunt with. For short range deer work I pack a BLR in 358. So I'm open to suggestions to what I should sell, keep, or replace them with. Thanks guys.............

I just read the OP talking about having two near-perfect moose rifles, and wants to switch them?

Crazy talk.

I get it though; I get bored sometimes too.

Hmm, you have two accurate ss hawkeye's in really good chamberings and you want to sell them and possibly buy a rifle that may not shoot well or have other issues.
hold on to them , either of them is an honest 300 yd cartridge and if your shooting a quarter mile at a swamp donkey your doing something wrong.

Sell one of them and custom barrel your 35 Whelen to a .338-06 and use 210 grain Noslers and hammer your moose at 400 yards... you don't 'need' a magnum.

I know, I know, I thought someone would give me the crazy talk speech, but like you mentioned sometimes you just get bored. This is my 5th 35 Whelen and 4th 375 H&H/Ruger. Time to change it up...........

Just like Silverado mentioned, I just get bored and want something different. I've had the luck of shooting all of my big game so far at less than 25yds. I do practice pretty regularly out to 400yds should the shot presents it self and I have no other option. Getting closer is my preference though.

Your right Dennis, the 338-06 is a good caliber. Might be a contender.....

7mm Rem Mag or 7mm WSM.

Hey Archie, good caliber choices I've had the 7mm Mag and a 7MM STW all good long range shooters, but I would like to stay in the 22" ish or less barrel length. Not really wanting a 26" tube

Thanks for your input fella's! I'm going to keep reading up on some of the cartridges mentioned and see if I can make some sort of decision. My moose hunt got scrapped this year so, I have a year to build or buy this thing. Might put both of them for sale in the EE shortly and sell 1 of the 2 for starters then move onto what I'm going to build. Might look at building something on the new Winchester Model 70 SS action.........

Your right Dennis, the 338-06 is pretty much the same as a 338 Win Mag with less powder. Might be a contender.....

WOW... you DO get bored a lot!

If you shoot all of your game that close, get a Ruger #1 in 45/70 and load some rip-snorting ammo for it. Hammer of Thor!

Edit to add: I have a small handful of Barnes TSX flat nose for the 45/70 that I'd even donate to the cause!

Ha Ha I'm lucky to have a very understanding wife who doesn't ask a lot of questions when she see's 4"x8"x48" brown paper boxes coming and going. I've been pretty good this past year, only a couple came home with me. I haven't planned the deer and bear coming out that close it that way it just happened, all of our deer hunting is in heavy bush so long shots don't happen. Been moose hunting the past 4-5years and the terrain is heavy bush to big clear cuts. I've had the couple 45-70's in GG and std version and a 444 Marlin. Great short range thumpers!

I have both and the 338WM generally stays ~200 fps ahead with the same weight bullets. Pretty much like comparing the 30-06 to the 300 WinMag.

Your right bearkilr, my mistake. I mixed it up with my 35 Whelen, it can run a 225AB at 2800fps which is within the 338 territory.(Which is MAX load for the Whelen BTW)

If you have a relatively quick 30 cal. already(30-06/300 mag) I'd go with the 375 H&H. Fine old cartridge. If your next one down would be a 7mm or less, I'd go with the 338 WinMag. A bit less redundancy at least. A Sako Kodiak with a scope in QD mounts would be a great moose gun, either caliber.
I still haven't figured out how to rid myself of overlapping calibers, thanks largely to the EE. :D

.....

I am a 7mm fan. I really like the 175gr Partition and you certainly don't need a 26" barrel. My friend's 24" Krieger (put together by Guntech) launches the 175's at well over 2900fps. I am certain you would be around 2900 with a 22" barrel. That combo - 7mm + 175gr Partition is an excellent big game setup. You cound also try the new 168 LRAB at 3000 fps.
