When living in the Yukon I saw a xray of this guys thigh bone destroyed by a 22mag, rifle fairly close range. any opinions on this round as a personal defense option?

From my personal experience I would say it hits pretty darn hard.. For a rimfire. I know in the states they make some little revolvers in .22mag so somebody must like it for personal defense.

They work well if you have to defend against groundhogs. :)

Don't know a thing about personal defense and what's best firearms-wise, especially since you're suggesting it might be defense against the 2 legged type of threat. If you were to take what the bear experts have to say about that situation, don't pick something that might work, pick something that will work. I've never heard anything definitive on the subject, but then, I don't have a reason to wonder whether or not .22WMR is a good self-defense option. I have hunted small game with them, and their effect (vs. .22lr AND .17HMR) is dramatically different. =greater

I do think that it would be a great deterrant to get hit by any projectile. The Magnum hits harder than a .22 and would surely stop someone or thing from bothering you further. In an emergency, it is definitely better than nothing at all. IMHO.

People tend to underestimate 22 LR. In my opinion, even out of a handgun 22 LR is plenty to deter a person. While it may lack larger calibers' punch/stopping power, 22 LR will in most cases immobilize a person. we humans are a pretty fragile spices. 22 Mag is only more.

22Mag has sometimes been called the poachers friend alluding to its use for taking deer size game with minimum noise. I was talking with a native fellow at the lgs last week. He was buying some 22 Mag ammo. I asked him what he used it for, his answere was small game up to deer at close range (on the res, of course).

likewise, some years back, may path crossed a group of poachers who would shoot deer with a 22 (Mag?0 from the window of their car, on farmers property over the fences, out of session...etc. they would shoot and come back a few hours later to collect. they claimed a high rate of kill. Very sorry that didn't report them.

They make very small revolvers in .22 mag and some of us have them in Canada as a restricted. The NA Minimaster.

But it wouldn't be the go to personal defence choice out of my collection.

Better than nothing. It'd be like a lightly loaded .223 not going as fast but judging from youtube videos they will still mushroom quite well.

.22mag only really shines in longer barrells. It is a highly effective round in a rifle (many caribou killed with savage .22 mags in Nunavut) but loses a lot of oomph when fired in a pistol.

Not a bad option for us in Canada as no mag limits in a semi auto rifle, however there are very few semis made, and fewer still that have hi capacity magazines... If someone makes a 20+ mag for the rem 597 I would be on it like a fat kid on a smartie!

Here's a simple question for you that may help you decide...

If someone was shooting at you with a 22 or 22 mag...
Would you run or seek cover?
What if you were really really mad, would you stand there and get shot or run and hide?

If yes, then it makes for a good defensive round... I would say.

Not every bad guy is going to expose himself at distance enough for you to take a well placed & effective shot with a .22
That's the problem with a .22 for self defence, they work for best case(or specific) scenarios, not something I would trust for worse case ie: close range, might only get one shot off, and it might not be centre-mass.
I also wouldn't trust it against a barrier.

I love the 22 mag, think it is one of the best rounds ever made. Excellent accuracy out to 100 yards, effective on small to medium small animals and relatively inexpensive to feed and lots of choices in ammo. Of all my guns, my 93BTVS is absolutely one of the 'never sell' in my collection.

ive got a .22 mag, love it in my .22xt rifle, 7 shot mag, ive used it in the past year to drop 13 crows, 3 ground hogs, 2 possums, 2 raccoons and a skunk, some out at quite the distance like 180 yards+

LOL....I have a 25 shot magazine that holds both 22WMR and .17HMR

You can zip through a lot of money REAL fast. :p
