Hunting hearing protection

I am just looking to see if anyone has suggestions for hearing protection that can be worn while hunting that won't affect my ability to hear game. I know most just go without ear plugs but I already have tinnitus from work and would like to avoid making it worse if possible.
I would also like to avoid breaking the bank if possible.

Thanks,
Steve

Electronic ear muffs, but i dont use anything when hunting, the shot or 2 occasionally isnt a huge thing, i know it happens over time, shooting clays where its like 100 shots a day + the 4 other ppl around you, i use the ones from princess auto but that muffles the sound a bit more then electronic ones.

Well, you could try something like the Howard Leight Impact Sport. That's what I have, I think I've seen them going as low as $60 some places. With the microphones adjusted you might even be able to hear things better than normal.

Thanks for the info. I will look into those a bit. Does anyone know of an ear plug style device that does the same thing?

I have custom plugs I got from the orthodontist. I use them but they can be a pain to put in..best other two I have used are the band style plugs and the Stihl brand of plugs, they are cone shaped with all the rings. I can't stand foam in my ears..I also have Tinnitus. I have the Impact Sport muffs too but don't use them much for hunting..should have though. You can pay some pretty big bucks for Spotears, SoundGear, Radians and Walkers.

There is nothing you can wear that won't affect your hearing. You don't really need anything. For a couple of shots you may take it's not an issue.

Think you better start doin a little more readin and less typin..lol I took one shot, again one shot and my ear rings constantly, continuously, forever with no cure.

If your ears have ever been ringing after shooting, you already have some irreversible hearing damage.

Do I wear hearing protection when hunting? No, but it is a risk. If you are sitting in a space where surroundings (trees, bushes) reflect sound back to you a single shot can do it.

I see occasionally 'intermittent sound' earplugs at WSS or Cabelas. They appear to have a small ball inside that is forced into a cone by the pressure associated with loud noises. They drop back when the noise/pressure ceases allowing you to use most of your hearing. Has anyone tried these? I'm curious if they work well, I don't care for the electronic ear muffs.

I do know a guy or two that keep a regular pair of muffs around their neck and just slide them on for the shot. Extra movement and the inability to take quick shots might impact your hunting style though.

I have the Howard Leight electronic earmuffs mentioned in this thread. I bought mine on Amazon for $50 or so shipped. They work well for hunting and at the range.

I wear regular 32NRR earplugs from Canadian Tire when I'm on the range or duck hunting. I actually sometimes wear both and just turn the amplification on the earmuffs all the way up.

Have any of you guys had issues with them sealing against your head? I may just have a big noggin, but i find the headband is too small, so the muffs touch at the top above my ear, but don't seal well below my ear at the bottom, and the headband doesn't seem to have any adjustment (that i could find anyway).

I have a pair of Howard Leight impact sports. Awesome muffs, effective protection and great sound amplification.

For the money I think I will try those Howard Leights and see if I can get used to wearing ear muffs.

I also have a set of the Peltor combat ear plugs that have one end for passive protection and the other end has the non electronic active protection which doesn't block as much noise until you take a shot. These work well at the range but I think they muffle quiet sounds to much to be effective for hunting.
Maybe the sonic defenders work better in this regard than the Peltor version but I have never seen them in a store to try out yet.
