just received my new Ljungman ag42 need help identifying caliber

6.5mm - 8mm.... is a pretty obvious difference, you should be able to tell with a ruler, if in doubt slug it.

have fun - the ljungmann is a hoot! [ hint: if you remove the shell deflector, the brass will eject at 90 degrees from you]

Well I just got back from the store and yes it is a 6.5x55. I have email th seller about this as they had advertise the rifle as a 8mm. Il get back wen they respond.

I am kinda disappointed as the stock and the pai t is in ruff shape, I was hopoing for a 8mm , it would have ben rare, and I was hopping it was a 8mm to buy a vz24 as a same caliber rifle and surpluss round available

What other milsurpluss would you buy in 6.5 and do you know if there is surpluss ammo available.?

in 6.5x55 SE ? yea.... you are pretty much confined to Swedish rifles M96, M38, m94 Mauser - Krag-Jørgensen[norway], I'm sure a few modern hunting... milsurps... not much I know of.

though the nice thing about shooting 6.5 opposed to the 8mm is you save about 10 grains of powder in your hand loads....

I can't get the gas tube of, it seems like there a punch in the gas block , is that normal?

Drilled and taped for a scope mount?

Don't worry about the gas tube - it is stainless steel & yes I believe it is in there for good [mine won't come out either - trying may damage it]

the holes ~ rumor is for a scope mount that was never developed, sometimes you will hear it was for a rifle grenade sight ... someone who knows for sure will chime in. - too bad you have to cut the stock to make use of them.


While you have it apart ~ play around with the rear sight, there's a nice little surprise there for you [by play around, I mean 'take it apart' ]

The gas tube is supposed to come out but I gave up. It looks too prone to damage. If you really need to take it out, you may have to heat it up first. Be sure to remove the regulator assm first. I just run bore cleaner and pipe cleaners through it.

Well thegundealer just agreed to adjust the price by 50 $ for the condition and there erroneous caliber advertisement. All I all I'm happy.

All in all he should adjust the price whatever that was. I recall a manuf date of 1945 when this thread started and of course the caliber.
Had someone tried to fire a 8X57, the rifle may have exploded from a slam fire. The seller should have known better!

Well I just recieve a second ag 42 and I have my first one sold to a friend. This ine seem in much better shape in the picture.

Well I am a bit perplex now, I think the rifle may have ben refinished would that affect value? Also the disc seem to be missing marking?

New rifle on the left: the new rifle does not appear to have a stainless steel gas tube, or it was painted in the refurbishing process. Also there's number stamp on the barrel of the new ag42 and not the old one.

Your gas tube is the blued steel type used on previous AG42. Manys AG42b didnt receive the stainless gas tube, my AG42b have the old model tube aswell.
