7.62X39 PRC is it corrosive or non?

There are several old threads discussing this very ammo... I purchased the exact same stuff from Lever, sold as non-corrosive. I conducted the bright nail test and found that two of the ten rounds I tested were corrosive...

As stated by others, I treat it all as corrosive... Don't need to boil the barrel, just pour boiling water down the barrel to neutralize and remove the salts, then dry it well and lightly oil. Doesn't really take that much longer. Taking the gas system apart is another story...

Some say using windex immediately after shooting helps too.

Whatever, moral to my story is buy the cheapest ammo you can find and clean her well!

Yep all surplus ammo is treated like corrosive even the newer production, now shooting Tradeex PCR 308 in my SA NM M1A and after 200 rounds big clean up and new greasing, it take 10 minutes ( very good ammo by the way @ 369.00 a case)... JP.

Old Bill has some history, talk to some of the old timers. Maybe he's changed but he lost my respect and business a couple decades ago.

Well my friend... I didn't know his history before I set my foot it to that store! Even when I mentioned to him that some people sells corrosive saying its non-corrosive, he was cursing about those seller!! I guess he just wanted to make it looks more convincing & you usually those crooks are good at it! But one thing guaranteed, me or dozen of my friends will never set foot in his store.

Just opened up the can today. Didn't get any skunky smell from it. As few other guys mentioned in previous posting corrosive ammo smell skunky! What you guys say?

I agree with you on the cleaning part but my question is, would you boil you barrel to clean non-corrosive? If I pay extra for non-corrosive then i will clean it as a regular gun not boiling it!

Boil your barrel? I shoot corrosive from time to time and just clean with G96 gun treatment making sure to soak every surface and give a light scrub with an old tooth brush. Not once have I had a spot of rust on any of my surplus rifles. Takes less than 10min for a Mosin, maybe 15min for an SKS. I've learned this from old guys who have been shooting corrosive for decades and likewise have never needed to clean with boiling water.

Smelling good or bad has nothing to do with beign corrosive or not, it all has a chance to smell funky after sitting in underground bunkers for soo many years. Like other have already said, it was made in 1972, non corrosive stuff is made early/mid 90's and later, the stuff you have is the same ammo that Lever arms has been getting soo much bad press about, and i have personally had it rust my guns. If you are going to shoot it, clean it like you would any other corrosive.

On a side note, i recently purchased some ammo from Tulammacanada, haven't shot it yet, so i can't comment on accuracy, etc. But as far as wondering about a new companies legitimacy, i paid, ammo got delivered a few days later, no issues.

Assume its all corrosive... what will it hurt to clean your rifle.....

The problem with that is the Non-C stuff is priced higher. Often much more.
So if you are going to do a full cleaning, you might as well search out cheaper corrosive stuff.

I'm a cheap prick, so I buy mostly corrosive.

Thanks. I will try the g36. I guess we just live & learn :)

I got some from Tulammo as well but haven't tried it out yet. Let me know your feedback. Thanks.
