Hello,

Anyone ever heard a moose roar?

I know this sounds funny but when I was walking out of the bush at night I was doing the odd moose grunt going down the trail

All of a sudden I heard this guttural roar come from the bush I figured it was a moose be cause I could hear the thrashing from the rack with the trees

Never heard that sound before in my hunting time

Yup, it's a very aggressive vocalization. It's amazing the variety of sounds that both cows and bulls will make if you spend long enough around them.

If you want to hear weird vocalizations from moose, you need to witness a bull in the act of breeding a cow... The bull I shot a couple weeks ago, bred a cow 50 yards from me for several minutes... And then squared off with a second incoming bull... In the dead calm of early morning, on my knees in the frosty grass holding a bow in my hand, it was an incredible display.

You weren't concerned about the lactic acid build up in the meat from breeding? :p

I was more concerned about the lactic acid built up in my own carcass, and keeping it in there, rather than trampled into the mud... Especially after the second bull charged me three times after the big one was down and out...

If you alarm a moose, they will give a loud sound almost like a huge belch, some people would describe it as a roar.

It's the equivalent of hearing a whitetail snort. It's BAD... it means the moose is gone.

How big was the second bull? Any where near the size of the one you took?

The second one was a good bull too, but would not have scored near what this one did... He would have been around 50", but with a tall rack, nice basket and long points... Sure was pretty to look at... And I had enough time as I was running backwards!

I had a bull approach in the dark within 30 yards or so , all the time sounding like a rottweiler puking up a sock crossways. For about a 1/2 hour ,then still vocalizing ,drifted away.Never seen him but was close enough I could smell him.No moose draw.........hunting late season elk .Thought I may have to plug him in self defense.Harold

I meant to ad, that moose will also vocalize at each other, with an anger-alarm type sound; cows will not breed with a young bull, and you will sometimes hear cows talking to younger bulls that way. Basically telling the young-ish bull to eff-off...

So you could stumble onto that situation, and not actually have caused the moose to give an alarm call.

Really late rut last November in my area. Had 2 bulls locked head to head knocking trees over, a third young bull charging back and forth in front of me on the trail, then a 4th big bull walking circles around myself and the other bulls and suddenly he roars when within about 30 metres of me. That first roar rattled the hell out of me as I had never heard it before.

My hunting partner was further down the trail and could not see the bull. He had never encountered a bear in the woods so he went into a panic that we had a grizzly bearing down on us.

Heard 2 different bulls roaring/groaning last week. One was getting louder as he walked toward me, then it stopped and he never showed himself. The 2nd one groaned the same noise about 3 times, then a cow balled behind me.
