caliber

ya, cost of ammo... per shot, bought in bulk.

and what if we take grizz off the table, just deer n black. whats the cheapest i can get away with in that case?

Anything from .270 WIN up to .30-06 SPRG is very suitable, with .308 WIN bieng very slightly less expensive than the others.

odd - should be aught

30 aught 6 = 30-06

now back to the original question, I like my 25-06 for deer and it would work for blackies, but your looking for cheap and easy so I would say you cant go wrong with a 308

what caliber would you guys recommend mainly for deer, but capable of taking bear?

Not many critters get back up after being hit (in the vitals) by a 165 grn bullet in 30 Odd 6

popcanhunter, I hope I didnt confuse your quest with my recommendation (30 odd 6) for a good all around caliber for deer or bear.
The correct word would be cartouche de sécurité ... Safety cartridge in 30-06 Springfield.

With the proper cartouche de sécurité and balle you will be able to safely take most game animals in North America ...again within reason.

But, it really depends on what Province you reside in and the Game Laws of that Province.
For example Buffalo in BC has some confusing Laws when it comes to the hunting of buffalo.

Anyways, trust you have done some reading on the recommendations and then the real task begins, finding a gun that suits you, fits you and falls within your means.
Yes, the last comments are far your original question, but eventually you will be hunting for the right gun for you and the game you decide to hunt.
Best Regards,
Rob
