Talk me out of a mp 22!

Well I bought my first pistol today........... twas not the m&p 22 however. The stories of shooting high and sight problem as well as hard to find mags scared me away sadly. I ended up with the buckmark urx with the fiber optic sights, in the end the trigger, grip and sights sold me. Cant wait to try it out this weekend! Found a spare mag at cabelas already for it too.

Saskboy, you can fit aftermarket M&P sights on your M&P22. I put a front fiber on mine to match my M&P9 sights, and it works like a charm. I've never shot mine for pure accuracy, but it is definitely more accurate than my M&P9 is (not really a fair comparison, but there it is).

Another consideration is that it is relatively hard to find decent holsters for the Ruger and the Browning. The M&P22 and GSG/Sig 1911-22s generally fit the same holsters as their full-size brethren.

What front FO sight did you put on? Did it need to be fitted? I have a spare 5" Pro Series FO and rear sight that I want to install.

Congrats! make sure to keep her clean i heard they are a bit picky with cleanliness, i'm sure you wont have that issue, if it's your first gun you'll prb wear the finish off just cleaning it lol!!!

I love the way mine feels, fires, sounds, looks.... That said, I don't find it very accurate.. which means I don't fire it much.. which means I don't enjoy it.
 
I have one and I love mine. Got it and bought 2 additional mags and a green Crimson Trace laser. They shoot and feel great, infact I shoot it way more then both my glocks or any firearms for that matter.. Rugers and Browning look fugly in books.
 
Have a mp 22, it's the one gun that always goes to the range with me. Great gun, built by Carl Walther in Germany. Mags are hard to find, maybe cause there lots of mp 22.

I've been looking at getting a M&P 22 for a few weeks now. One of the guys at work bought one. Eventually I want a M&P 9mm as well. So..

You say "in the end". Good luck with that. I have a couple ruger MKIII handguns. They are great. Look cool, shoot well etc. Fantastic pistols. Then you go to clean them....

The M&P takes down like a regular pistol. Not like the ruger or the Buckmark. A buddy of mine has the Browning. It's a toss up between those and the Rugers. I like both. But for high round count duty pistol practice.. I want a pistol that feels like a regular duty pistol and has a nice easy takedown for cleaning.

The negatives I see so far for the M&P, are the lack of mags and frankly the sleeved barrel isn't something I would want.

As for shooting high. I can think of three reasons for that 1) Ammo. Rimfire ammo shoots very differently. I have 20 metre indoor ammo tests using 22LR rifles where the difference between ammo is as much as 3" in height and 3" in width. That's with a rifle and scope bagged. So no human error unlike offhand shooting with a pistol 2) Distance shooting. Duty pistols are sighted in for 25 metres. 3) Sight picture. A duty pistol is sighted in at the 6 O'clock on the target. Most target shooters have their sights on the target. Not so with a duty pistol. Aim below the target so you can see it.

I'll most likely be getting one in a few months. One of the guys at work bought one and raves about it. He's put enough rounds through it now that I'd know if there were any problems.

Remember to check back on this thread in 6 months to a year. I somehow doubt your decision on 22LR pistol was the last 22LR pistol decision you'll be making. I remember when I was naive enough to believe that. Or that I would only have three firearms, or that the 24 guns safe was way more than I would ever need.....

I believe jackrabbit was referring to my post about putting an aftermarket FO front on my M&P22.

I used a Warren Tactical sight. It took about 30 minutes of fitting. You have to be much more careful installing sights on the M&P22 vs the centerfires, since the slide on the 22 is some sort of light alloy.

The front sights from the long slide models are taller, iirc, so that might or might not work depending on how much elevation adjustment you have in the rear sight.
