Places to hunt in Southern Ontario

Place: Hullett Marsh

Location: Near Goderich

Comments: 5000 acres of mixed woods and wetlands. Big on hunting waterfowl, about half of the marsh is pretty much dedicated to waterfowl.

They also release pheasants so there's lots of upland/dog activity. Mixed with horses and hikers, but everyone seems to get along.

Lots of other game activity, rabbits, squirrels, etc.

There's also an unofficial 'range' there where people throw clays or shoot 22's.

No cost, just find a parking spot (though make sure you read their regulations first).

Whoops - according to this, macton forest is no longer hunting.

Place Macton Regional Forest
Location: west of Waterloo near Wallenstein. Corner of highway 86 and Manser road. Google maps coordinates are: 43.622959,-80.696492 (go to google maps, paste those numbers into the search bar).

Comments: Park and hunt. It's a very small piece of land bounded by highway 86 and Manser Road. Consists of a long and narrow strip of land full of mature pine/spruce trees. Park at the north side of the property, no pass or anything required.

I've been there, seen signs of turkey and seen a tree stand so I assume there's deer there. It's a very tiny hunk of land right on a busy highway.

Place: Crown Land near Haliburton (not quite Southern Ontario, but accessible from much of it same day drive)
Location: Take 400 north then 118 towards Haliburton. Turn North/Left off 118 on Black Creek Road. See crown land map.

Comments - this is probably the biggest chunk of crown land the farthest south. Hunting/ATV'ing allowed. The area is large, triangular in shape bounded on the south by 118 roughly, and on the top by 35.

BUT! If you are camping there, be careful. There's a hunk of land on the south end called 'poker lakes/cinder lakes' and an area on the north side called frost lakes. If you are camping on those two areas of that section of crown you require a camping permit, and must camp on the defined campsites (the campsites on Cinder lake are absolutely beautiful BTW). You can apparently camp outside those areas without paying/registering but you will get nailed and fined if you camp in the poker lakes or frost lakes area without paying. There's lots of room to move/hunt/atv in this hunk of land and I've seen signs of moose. Also seen quite a few campsites and tree stands hanging around there, so there's definiitely folks hunting. I'll be there this weekend :).

If you are just ATV'ing the area, as you come in to Black Creek road about 2 miles or so, there's a grassy area to the right just at the start of crown land where everyone seems to park and unload the atv's. Be aware that until you get to that point it's actually private land on both sides of the road.

there is a piece of crown land in Port Perry called Nonquon, and yes it is still open to hunting.

This should be a sticky!!

Thank you all very much! Tagged for interest. I should also say to check the the hunting regs before going. To ensure that you don't bring too much gun. Some areas are muzzle loader, shotgun or bow only.

I paddle that area a lot - it is Black River Road.:)

Yes, it's black river road, I confirmed this weekend. Also got the full check by the local MNR guy, polite and friendly. I'm surprised he managed to get his truck in where we were. This is a great spot to go ATV'ing by the way, lots of four wheelers and dirt bikes whizzing around.
