YOUR Perspective on What True Hunting is...

True hunting???

That was gone years ago when people needed to hunt to live/eat.

Today's hunting is still hunting but it is now a hobby and not a necessity , but it is carrying on a tradition of survival.

I would argue the hunting is more necessary today than it was years ago. Yes there was a greater need for providing food years ago but the act of hunting linked us to the land and emphasized that we are a part of the natural world. The more we stray from that connection the less regard we have for the natural world. The end result is we ignore our obligation to preserve it and it perishes.

Hunters are one of the last group of people that still hold this connection as as such are a voice to protect the wilderness. If we left this task to the tree huggers and governments it would not last long.

Hunting is more important today than it has ever been.

Well said, thank you for that. I agree 100%.

True hunting to me would be using a Bow or something even more primitive like rocks/ spear. Obviously it's far more practical to use a rifle, and ethical in case you miss the kill zone and your game runs off wounded. But the close range needed and physical exertion while stalking on foot required while using a bow resonates to me as being 'true' hunting. Long range shot's with a rifle can be very tough, but it's just that, long range.

Baiting like the due in some provinces for say bear is in no way 'hunting' in my books. Not even close. To me, there is something very honorable about the concept of Fair Chase and it's something that needs to be respected. There's nothing respectful or honorable about baiting or driving in a truck all day down forest service roads.
