The famous Brenneke slug in action. Seems to justify it's reputation for having it chambered for Griz country.

I have challenger slugs which look similar. What I don't get is how can they be a magnum slug when the powder portion fills up less than a 1/4 of the shell??

Hunted wild boar with these back in europe all my life... Expensive but very effective... Recovering these out of the animal is always an exitement; some stay one piece with a nice mushroom expansion, some break into pieces.

Older ones use to have felt fixed with a phillips screw at the bottom, new ones has that plastic. Originals always functioned well compared to fakes...

Those Brennekes aren't as fast as the Challengers, but they weigh 163 grs more, hence the lighter powder charge. The plastic wad doesn't seem to stay attached as well as the old fiber wads attached with the Philips screw did.

A 1 oz Challenger

600 gr Brennekes with a 1 ox Foster. Note that the base of the wad just slips over the stem and seems to be easily lost post impact, although I could detect no difference in performance

In my meager single experience, the wild boar I personally shot at 75 meters with an Ithaca Deerslayer was DRT.

Unfortuneately in happened against a deep snowbank on a hill. Hence, no recovery of the through and through spent Brenneke.

North Sylva sells Rottweil and Challenger, I think most shops just don't bring them in for some reason. I rarely see them but always grab some when I do. The newest Rottweil 20ga Brenneke's I acquired look identical to the Challenger pictured above...

Yup, if you're headed somewhere where something furry might think you look tasty, these slugs are the only answer to bet your life on. They're much harder than regular lead slugs and do a disproportionate amount of damage.

I've used challengers for years, after about 80yds the bleed off performance quite rapidly. Shot plenty of deer with them, no problems penetrating both shoulders and exiting at 75yds on big bucks.
