what's a good 30-30 round

I like 170 grains for my nearly identical 32 Special. It is interesting that many Canadians like the 170 gr.stuff while Americans will often recommend the 150 gr stuff for deer. The 170 grain stuff is probably best for mixed game areas us Canadians hunt in while many yankees hunt in areas where WT is as big as it gets. 30-30 can be had for low price often and I can't remember anyone ever complaining about performance from any brand.

Any soft point hunting ammo in 30-30 will put a deer down. That is what it is designed for. No deer is gonna be able to tell the difference between a 150 or 170 grain bullet.
Why not go buy a few boxes of different kinds, and actually go to the range with your gun, and god forbid, actually fire some rounds.
The box that prints the best groups is the one you want.

Depending on the difference you can simply turn windage and elevation on the scope when shooting one or the other. Zero with the main cartrige, then move from the zero for the other - like 2 moa high, 1 moa left or something.
In my opinion go grab a box of cheap winchester in 150 and 170. Fire both and see what you like best. I dont know where you hunt but those two kinds will do for deer out to 150 yards. If you want to spend about 7-10 bucks more a box try the leverevolution.....but if you dont have a scope then its kinda pointless. Unless your awesome with those iron sights!
The thing about the 30/30 is that pretty much all 150 & 170gr RN bullets were made to work at 30/30 velocities and will all serve you well. Use what works best in your rifle.

I have been using the 160 gr leverevolution ammo in my 336 texan and it groups so well that,even though i have started hand loading other calibers,i may just stick with the factory stuff for my .30/30.
In the years leading up to WW2, a great many people living in northern Canada shot big game year around, to live on. 30-30 was by far the commonest calibre. More moose were shot with a 30-30 than with any other calibre.
Every tiny little grocery store had some big game ammunition and the one calibre they always stocked was 30-30. But it would be rare if you could go into the country grocery store and get 30-30 ammunition in other weight bullets, than 170 grain.
They also stocked only one brand of ammunition, CIL Dominion.

I started out with the Remington Core-lokt and Winchester 170 silvertips, used 150 grain Imperial stuff on coyote in BC, later tried cast 175 grain lead bullets, and now use Hornady 170 grain interlocks pretty much exclusively. That bullet has proved effective for me on Deer, Moose, and Black bear. They all work, and they all work very well. So well in fact that I have no interest in bothering with the newer pointy 30-30, and certainly not with any of the expensive premiums. The bullets for this round have been developed over a hundred years of use. They are very well designed for the purpose.
