45-70 Trapdoor loads with H4198

I've got a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and I've got a couple pounds of H4198 I'd like to use up.
I'm loving the R7 and IMR 3031 for my hot loads but I want a nice light load for punching paper. Around the 1000-1200 fps mark.
Will be using 390gr hard cast gas checks.

Care to share any recipes?
 
Welcome to the Club :) I've used some data from Lyman's 45 edition and shot 405gr Jacketed bullets using 11gr Unique at advertised velocity 890 fps to 15gr @1223 fps. Pretty light load and I always look down the barrel to make sure it's clear. Laugh2 2400 powder from 22gr to 30gr. a bit faster about 1100 fps to about 1400 fps. I haven't tried H4198 yet so I can't help you there.
 
28 gr of H4198, pushing my 405 gr GC bullet is a very mild load and pleasant to shoot. It will still knock down a steel ram at 500 meters. It is advisable to put something over the powder to keep it against the primer. i use a disk of 1/8" thick packaging foam (pink non-static) slightly larger in diameter that the case. Accuracy is remarkably good.
 
"...I'll start out with 28gr and..." Just make sure you're looking at their H4198 Trapdoor loads and not IMR4198 or the other two data lists.

Could you run that by me again, please?

I'm trying to work through it.
A small charge of powder, so some type of disc is used, INSIDE THE BRASS CASE, to hold the powder close to the primer, but this damages (rings) the chamber of the rifle!!!!!
A typical case of some gun writer completely out of anything to write about, so he comes up with this.
 
Just for the record, i would seriously expect the H4198 could produce the best performing loads in the 45-70.
I have loaded for more than 10 different Marlins over the years, and its a top performer in nearly everyone of them!

A great powder for this caliber!

In the long run, let your rifle tell you what it likes.

As far as case fillers, I have used Dacron and Capoc. (With CAST BULLETS). I dont reccomend it for jacketed bullets.

If you are going to use a filler, be sure to fill the entire volume above the powder and the bottom of the seated bullet. Use just enough to fill the space loosely (not packed). It does usually increase pressures just slightly.
This doesnt really matter much, because all reloaders are suppose to work up loads slowly to monitor pressure progression.

This ringing i think is very rare! But wont be an issue if the balance of case Volume is taken up by a filler.

A filler is not nessesarily needed if your case volume load density is higher than 80%.
I have used filler allot in my 308win cast bullet shooting. Works great!

I have even compared loads with and without filler to compare ballistic uniformity and accuracy. In almost every case, filler improved cast bullet accuarcy and load stats such as standard deviation and extream spread.

As for using filler with jacketed bullets and standard Burn rate powders, I dont think its practical.

You're not the first person to tell me how great H4198 shoots in their 45-70.
What are your thoughts about Reloder7?
I find it very accurate in my rifle. Where we shoot is exactly 140m and I'm getting 2-3" groups with my moose load.
It could probably get a little better but I am an average shot.
