edit- ps there is more to the story but for now..

Yes, you CAN rebarrel to a short action cartridge, but you will still have a long action rifle. Why do want this anyway? What is your goal? Won't change the weight enough to make any difference and you will still need to use a full bolt throw to eject a case...

But, as was stated, you can do whatever you want.

A short-action cartridge on a long action is easy to do...lots of manufacturers did or do just that because they only offered one action length. I'll refrain from the CGN-standard technique of telling you that you want what I want, rather than what YOU want...:)

However, maybe someone with some gunsmithing knowledge can chime in about re-barreling an A-Bolt. I thought that there were issues relating to the barrel attachment method used by Browning on those rifles?

With VLD bullets a short action caliber in a long action with the longer mag length would be a good idea.

You can rebarrel it easily to many different short cartridges... if they fit the bolt face.... many not not feed through your magazine though...

rather than jerk us around, specifically what do you have in mind and what is the rifle now?

In some cases I really like a shorter cartridge in a long action. Depends in the cartridge though. For seating long heavy bullets out to the lands when you have a long throat barrel it's ideal.

Dennis is right though, sometimes feeding can be difficult if not impossible, best to research what cartridge you want use and see if it will work.

Hey Fellas!

Sorry for being MIA for a couple days..

No jerking around, just a question for a possible option for a Mates Stainless Abolt which is .270win but with a Barrel that has sat in a gunbag up in the Tropics of Aus for months an is pitted an rusty, He is also wanting to hunt Sambar an have more power as he has had a bad run with the .270winchester but we wont go there.

I know the general option would be a 30-06 barrel, an that very well could be the case, but I wanted to see if it could be say a 308, 338 Federal even, but then again would be a bit silly not to utilise the L/A an if he wanted to reload make it a 338-06..

Ideally I think he should just put the rifle in the Safe and buy a 7mm Rem mag or 300 Win... rifle can still be used later down the track as anything... Moneys kind of an issue for him ATM.

Im not sure if accuracy has been effected, I think it may have hence why hes not into it.

cheers

I think a 9.3x62 or .35 Whelan would be a good replacement for a .270.

I don't think of a medium as a replacement for the .270, as they fill different rolls, but either would be a fine addition to the .270. If you guys have access to a cracker jack gunsmith, and your pal is intent on spending the money necessary to re-barrel his A Bolt, if he turns the rifle into a switch barrel, he can have as many different cartridge combinations for that rifle as he can afford barrels for. The only limitations are the bolt face and the barrel contour so that each will fit the barrel channel of the stock.

I agree with 9.3x62 - and as long as you reload, ammo can be expensive otherwise if you shoot a lot.
I have a Husqvarna 9.3 x62 that was rechambered from a 9.3 x57.
It shoots 1" groups at 100 yards, and is excellent for everything up to Grizzly, without heavy recoil ( I hate recoil, but with a limbsaver pad, I find this is enjoyable to shoot, even benchrest at the range.
Good trajectory and excellent power out to 250, but after 300 yards, the 286 grains drop a lot.

I'm not real familiar with the A bolt but running shorter cartridges through long actions has been going on for decades, Parker Hale is a prime example and going from a 270 to any standard (.473 head) short or medium case should cause no feeding issues at all. He should be able to chamber and feed anything from a 22-250 to a 358 win to a 6.5X55 or 7X57 right up to .375 Whelen without major issues.
