Mini 14 issues

Best of luck with ruger repair in Canada. If it's going to snapshots be prepared to wait. I had a revolver there for 1 yr jusy for a 15minute job.

I got my rifle back tonight. Less than 4 weeks door-to-door, not bad. Will get it out to the range tomorrow to see how it functions. Here is the timeline on the repair:

September 13 - rifle sent by Canada Post
September 23 - received by Snap Shots
October 1 - rifle sent back by Canada Post
October 10 - rifle in my hands.

According to the paperwork I received they performed the following repairs:
"Install special gas bushing, replace bolt, replace slide, replace recoil spring and slide, tune extractor, polish edges of chamber. Test fire: 40 rounds."

I will be firing more than 40 rounds tomorrow. I really hope it functions as expected and lives up to the legend of Mini-14 reliability.

Nope, my deal didnt work out so good. Sent away to snapshot, they said nothing wrong, just the heat shield needed work. Got charged for the work because the previous owner had work done to it, all i could see was the front sight was removed and a sleeve put on in its place. So they said its not under warranty, i have to pay to get the gun back. Cost me 180, including shipping, and first shot i took when i got it back, same old failure to extract. Now i will struggle on my own, not going that route again!!! But thanks for all trying to help here.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. My mini-14 580 series has been a wonderful rifle and eats all ammo with no issue.

So, is the extractor ripping the case, skipping off the case, or is the action staying closed and requires you to manually work the action to extract?

If you paid $180 to get the gun fixed and it's still not working you should be sending the rifle back to Snap Shots so that they can finish the work you have already paid for. Letting them off that easy just isn't right.

That being said it seems they were able to mostly fix my rifle. I've been out a couple of times and fired a couple hundred rounds without too many problems. I've had a couple of 'weak' extractions that are easy to clear but none of the complete failures to extract, followed by the double feed into the still full chamber issues I was having earlier. It's still not the 100% reliability the Mini 14 is renowned for and I'm going to keep a close eye on it in case the problem returns. If it does, back to Snap Shots it goes for fixing.

Totally off topic but how are those ProMag 30 rounders working out for you man? I've been thinking about getting some.

I replaced the factory op rod spring with a Wolfe spring on my mini ranch and it works great. Got the rifle cheap because no one could get it to work. Wolfe spring solved the issue
