Just curious if the accuracy is affected very much by the shorter barrel, I know for .308 you do not want to go UNDER 18 inches (Oh so I have heard) But before I purchase an M305, I was curious if there is any REAL benefit to buying the 22 inch one? (Other then bayonet lug)

Thanks.

Apparently the 22" will get you a few hundred FPS more. Only an issue if you are shooting to 1000 yds. The shorter 18" barrel may be more accurate due to increased stiffness.

Ok, thanks guys , I am planning on getting one long and scoping it, then two of the socom's if there are any left by the time I get around to it lol. Just wanted to see what people had to say about the differences between the two and what not. Mostly accuracy wise, I did hear some poor things about the last batch of shorties that came to Canada ,but that was mostly the looks of them, and sharp edges on the stock, which is no problem for me.

From a previous thread on the subject. According to my little friend I Snipe assuming 350 fps reduction:

308 150gr FMJ

Velocity/Trajectory
Table A Muzzle 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds
22 inch 2820/-1.5 2631/0 2450/-3.52 2276/-12.05 2108/-28.9
18.5 inch 2470/-1.5 2295/0 2127/-5.09 1966/-17.88 1813/-39.69

Hardly negligible in my opinion not to mention your USGI sight graduations mean jack. 5" lower at 300 yds but of course that only matters at 1000 yards.

3.5" shorter barrel will cost you less than 200fps, not 350fps.

I've owned both and hands down (not even close) prefer the shorty. It handles far better. SWAT did a barrel length (& velocity loss) article and it's nowhere near what some claim: BARREL LENGTH AND THE PRECISION RIFLE Why shorter barrels may often be better http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

During the development of the Tango 51, Tac Ops took a standard 26-inch barrel and cut it down to 18 inches in one-inch increments. Between 10 to 20 rounds were fired at each invrement. They found that a 20-inch barrel provides for a complete propellant burn and no velocity loss when using Federal Match 168-grain BTHP, a cartridge that has become something of a law enforcement standard. Going to an 18-inch barrel only resulted in a loss of 32 feet per second (fps).

All depends on what you want to use it for, but for handling (almost feels CQB ready) ;) the shorty is it.

Everyone who has been in battle with their M14 raise their hand.
I like a nice GI walnut stock as well. Just boring I guess.

I am getting three

Then you sir, have nothing to worry about! :)
You will need:
1x full length to put in nice boyds or USGI wood stock for your traditional look.
1x full length to put in a USGI glass stock, trust me you NEED this.
1x shorty to put in your blackfeather to fill the "little ass-kicker" slot in your arsenal.

You will also need 3x cans of brake cleaner and a nice sunday afternoon outside on what will be an epic cosmoline party!
And of course, we can assume you are picking yourself up 3x crates of the dirty old Norc steel cased ammo, these rifles don't like to share.

Have fun!
