What are the rules on hunting coyote on my own property in Alberta ..... I have a problem with the pack of a dozen or so attacking my pets they are so bad my neighbors are asking me to slay them and given me access to all there property... they nipped my tiny jack russell and now must die

Also any tips would be much appreciated

if in the country ...have at 'em. but really contact the wildlife service conservation office and ask them. but i believe you can protect your own property which includes pets. If neighbours agree to let you get them, maybe protect yourself with a written authorization.

Boy would I love to get a crack at one of those! I've tried a few times around here in mid winter, but no luck calling them in. Sounds like you have the opposite problem!

Not entirely sure on the rules in albeta. I know here in New Brunswick you can get a license to hunt them any time of the year since they are a nuissance animal. I cant imagine it being different there. Little bastards breed fast!

No license required for land you have access... private and crown. Kill em all!

Buy a good electronic caller and a .223/.243, and you'll have pelts up the wazoo. They are smart though... if you see one from your truck, the SECOND you stop, they are gonzo... if you keep driving they won't even flinch.

Back in the day, if the road we were driving was slightly hilly... if you saw a yote, keep driving until you're out of sight (behind a small hill or whatever)... then quick stop and let your shooter out... and keep driving... the yote will think there is no danger. Sneak up over the hill... POW- right in the boiler room!

Shooting yotes is a lot a fun.. and waaay harder than most people think!

All Riiiiight .... Just what I needed to hear. They don't run away the one I seen in the am just stood there about 60 yards away I open my suv hatch grabbed my coat closed my hatch we locked eyes for about 30 second and it slowly turned away and went back to looking for mice like I was not even there ... cockey bastard must be put to rest

Why bother? Vermin on your land, open fire. :) Nothing illegal about that and no closed season unless you're on Crown land

Grizz

Well Grizz, I mentioned the SSS cause there are a few anti hunters in the gun nutter community.
But, it doesnt bother me ...would rather read about the guys hunting and stories of missed opportunities thats all.
A J H you will need a lic for Alberia and I am not 100 % but there might even be a Guide needed seeing as your not from Alberia... they are considered fur bearing vermin by the gubberment.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting to the O P!!!

That won't last long, after you down a couple they will wise up fast. Even when using quality calls, it is necessary to change it up often. Just remember, they need to be instinctively faster and more keen to sights, smells, etc. than their prey. And their prey consistently gets the drop on on us humans.

Another thing to remember, is that the "braver" coyotes we see in the fall are likely this year's pups. Their actions do not reflect those of older, more mature coyotes. They will be splitting up and creating their own family groups about now.

When you get a pack try to line your shots try to get two with the first shot and go for one on the fly with a fallow up shot if they are going to be humane shots.

On your own property or anywhere else that you have permission:
Rule 1. Don't shoot if there is a danger of hitting anyone or their property (buildings, machinery, livestock, etc.)
Rule 2. There is just Rule 1.

Thanks Rob, guess im shot down on that one ...

Some county's by Edmonton have a ban on center fires I do believe but if your neighbours don't want them there.... Who is going to say anything..... I think it's strathcona county don't quote me on this

If you have one in a full run try dog bark sound or a whistle, they are curious creatures and that will usually stop them and they will look for the cause of the sound.
Also I've seen my brother completely miss with the first shot completely and we were able to stop him running with a loud whistle.
Wont work every time as these things do get pretty wise to hunters.
