Sako Bavarian Carbine - any thoughts

There are no sako bavarians with 6 round magazine in any caliber.

Troots mon! The 6th round goes in the chamber.

I was just looking at these on the Sako site. These things come in 9.3x62. :xes Now, anyone have 2500$ I can borrow? I'll pay ya back in moose meat. It usually goes for about 100$ a pound after all is said and done so I figure it's a good trade. Any takers? :D

No matter what they come in, your best bet is getting one in 270, 308 or 30-06 what ever you can find in a retailer stock.

If you are planing to order something from "sako catalog" prepare to wait for a year.

You are quite right, typo on my part. The Sako 85 Bavarian magazines hold 5 rounds in either calibre (243, 270, 308, 30-06) and the magnum chamberings hold 4. Funny, I don't think I've ever had more than 3 rounds loaded in the mag while in the bush.

Calibre choice does not really determine length... you can find 30-06 and 308 Bavarians in the same configurations. One will hold 5 rounds, the other will hold 5 rounds, one is a medium action, one is a short action.

Perhaps I'm mistaken but I was under the impression that a short action allows building a more compact rifle. Cooper M54s for example are more compact than M52s (think I have those model numbers right). Sounds like this is just simply not done in the Sako Bavarians although the Carbine is smaller an might 'fit' me better as a result. A short action might also fit better. I might just have to try it out.

Well I'm going to be the party pooper and tell you to google Sako 85 ejection problems.

Not mine. I think you are referring to the fact that it ejects high and MIGHT hit the scope? I have Sako low rings (QD mount), and my scope is still pristine.
The thing about the Internet is that issues get blown out of proportion by a few individuals, and the masses ("the dummy factor") blindly perpetuate the nonsense.

Never mind, I went back and reviewed your posts. You had a bad experience. Glad you got it sorted out. Just remember that the Internet usually brings out the minority of unhappy owners of anything: cars, motorcycles, guns, whatever. The majority are usually too busy to find time to praise their toys online. You're not helping by supporting the "parade rainers".

Speaking of mounts, I have optilocks for sale, half price, anyone ? ^)))))))))))))

On a serious note, I have to say that I have no doubt in sako, I bet 90% of people wont have an issue and everything else is just top notch.

if I were to take up hunting anytime in the near future, of the firearm models we carry at Ellwood Epps, the single rifle I would purchase as my hunting firearm would be the Sako Bavarian... the excellence of manufacture on these guns is beyond compare, even when placed against rifles such as those offered from Blaser, from Mauser, from Merkel, or any other high-end European manufacturer. Sorry, but North American guns simply do not reach the quality or finesse of the European builders, and that includes Remington... we have sold many Bavarian Carbines to our customers throughout the years, and not one has ever regretted their purchase decision.

This pretty well sums up the majority of Sako 85 owners... but hey, what would Epps know? right?

Well, perception is a nice thing, but reality is slightly different.

Sako 85 is only available since 2006. So "many years" its not like really THAT many years. Sako 75 has quite a reputation, no argument, but Sako 75 had different bolt face. Ejection issue on 85 model has been known for quite some time, if not ALL that time. Not everyone but it happened QUITE a lot for comfort even if you consider people mentioned it back in my topic.

Just saying. Not that I am in retail business describing my top shelf merchandise, you know :)

Well this thread has gone south!

But your comments are so ripe for the picking, it's difficult to resist. Do you think Sako would have rectified the problem by now if there is/was a problem? Ya think? Secondly, 8 years of Sako sales at Epps is alot of guns!

You had a bad experience, leave it at that. Perpetuating nonsense isn't fair to the OP.

I'm not repeating internet stories. I had a 85 with medium rings and a Leopold 3-9x40 on it and it would flip cases backwards and leave them in the action and ding the bottom of my scope. A friend has the same problem but He went to high rings and rotated his scope 45 degrees. He has No check weld to speak of and it looks super dumb.

Not everyone hunts with high rings and 56mm objectives like Europeans do.
