Legalities: SBR Conversion kits for Pistols

Yes, purposely classified as a pistol by the importer to err on the side of caution (understandably) so as to not get the entire line ruled as restricted. Here's the quote from Mr Wolverine.

They're still making up their own interpretation of the law. If this is a club rule then I understand, but it's not the law.

Case in point, take a pistol frame and add a "carbine" upper as so;

It's still a pistol. You've done a modification (in this case not permanent, but the permanency doesn't matter) and it's still a pistol. The only thing that needs to change in this case is the barrel length on the registration cert, which will still be classified as a pistol.

However, if you made a grip that was not a pistol frame, it would (should) be a non-restricted firearm (supposing barrel length). That carbine is not restricted, but the frame it sits on is.

I was told by the rest of our board that he is just common for him to make some noise on anything he sees unique. I was assured that we are in no violation of any rule. Just keep the conversion on a separate box during transport.

A handgun is a handgun and will ways be handgun, thus it will always be either restricted or prohibited. A rifle or shotgun is simply a firearm, and falls into classes based on it's features. Altering the features can alter the class of the firearm, as such a non-handgun can move freely towards greater or lesser restriction depending on modifications done to it. RCMP policy would show that firearms cannot move back up the list once they have been moved down, ie. you cannot reclassify a Non-Restricted into Restricted, and then back to Non-Restricted. This is completely separate from "named firearms", falling into restricted or prohibited status, regardless of features.

There is nothing in law preventing you from having a rifle reclassified between Restricted and Non ad infinitum.

There is nothing in law preventing you from having a rifle reclassified between Restricted and Non ad infinitum.

Maybe it was just the short barreled Dominion Arms shotguns. I remember reading somewhere that is you registered an 8" barrel with the pistol grip, the CFC would classify it as a pistol, and thus could not be changed back.

Irrelevant. Whether or not the kit is installed, you still have a restricted firearm and it has to be treated as such. The law is still the law whether the PO is familiar with it or not. This is a NON-ISSUE. You're not looking to change the status of your handgun. You're still shooting it at the range. This is essentially a conversation about putting a bigger GRIP on your handgun. They are legal to buy because they DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING except the ease in which you aim your handgun. Tell the fudd to stick to wabbits.
