Mounting a red dot on a grizzly - smithy work required?

I need a pest control / beater 12ga for the farm. Going with a Grizzly / flashlight forend / red dot combo. Am I going to need a smithy to mount a rail on the receiver for the red dot or can I buy something I can install myself?
 
no you can get a saddle style mount that uses the action pin holes. the rail is the better way to go though. Its just a few drilled and tapped holes. any first year machinist can knock that out in no time. I wouldn't pay more than 10 bucks a hole.
 
Maybe he wants the shorter barrel? When you factor in the short barrel, it is much cheaper. And the quality is often better than the express 870s, and accessories are much more available than for the 500.

He said pest control I think a short barrel would be stupid. And I doubt anything from china has the quality of an express. They only ####ty thing about the express is the finish which isn't even that bad. Just keep it clean. Just my personal opinion. Read a couple grizzly reviews! The service life of any DA or norinco Is 5000 or 6000 round. Where the remington would last much longer. And not to mention the 12 year old that made it probably screwed something up

Most reviews put the grizzly above most newer 870's except for the higher end wingmasters and such, many of which are on this site, just because it was made in china doesn't always mean it's crap.
My only gripe with the grizzy is that it feels WAY heavier than my mossberg, which if you're going to be backpacking it or something could be an issue.

Everyone gets there panties in a bunch because they have to polish their chamber. Just the fact that the service life is 1/4 of a remington or mossy means DA knows it's a #### product. I would rather file a bur, Polish a chamber, put a new spring/follower and extractor and pretty much have an 870police then save a few dollars on a gun that won't last. Just my 2 cents. But I guess if you are looking for some fun with a box fed 8.5" then that's your best choice :)
 
I decided to go the way of the mag fed Griz for a few reasons, most of which have to do with the fact that I want my family to use it instead of calling me whenever something unfriendly wanders into the yard. Not that they couldn't use an 870 or 500, but they'll be more likely to take care of business themselves if they've got a shorter mag fed available. As for the service life, this thing will probably only see action 3 or 4 times a year.

My dream shotgun will most likely be built around a Mossberg 500 or 500 Mariner. But until then, I welcome DA and all it brings with open arms.

I don't have a reliable smithy near me, and I don't know any machinists willing to work on guns (which is weird since I live in Bushville / Patchville). I'll most likely be phoning HiCal to see what they can do for me...
 
I'm looking at using the mesa 870 saddle on one of mine. Good quality and holds shells as well, runs about $120

The magazine fed ones can be finiky. The short barrel makes it harder to get shot on target since it opens up so much longer barrel more shot and energy on target. The big down side to the really short ones 8.5 inch is lack of accuracy, lack of range, lack of shot on target get the 12 inch ones or longer way more effective.

A break action side by side can be effective too for pests 2 shots simple just open drop shells in close and shoot. (take safety off it auto pops on)

If you do need to hit out to 50 with a 12.5, just switch to slugs, they're amazingly good out to 50 and beyond. I ran a 12.5 with a saddle rail and a TRS25, made hitting at 50 a joke, in fact 100 wasn't out of the question.
