just bought a socom 18 now what?

"...a socom 18..." A real SA Inc. marketing Dept. carbine or a Norinco copy? Not that it should matter. If you wanted a rifle for extreme accuracy, you should have bought a rifle for that.
In any case, as mentioned, buy some good ammo and shoot it before you do anything. Just remember that it's not a target rifle. It'll need a trigger job just like any other commercial firearm.

It would appear its the Dominion Arms model from Canada Ammo.

Yeah...clean it then shoot it a bunch, see how it groups. A new spring guide is a cheap easy upgrade, as is a new recoil spring [although Hungry/Tactical Teacher tells me that new springs really aren't necessary]. See how the rear sight works for you...in the past they have been soft and crappy, but I believe I read recently that people are finding them better...in any case, new sight parts are fairly cheap. If Hungry has one of his clinics in your area, definitely try to attend...you'll get more info and hands-on help in a day than you can collect reading the stickies for a month.

Beyond that, it really depends what you want to do with your rifle. You can spend a lot trying to make it a tack driver, but for my money, all I want is minute-of-zombie accuracy.

So --- I just ordered _my_ SOCOM carbine, making it #3 in the house. Do these rifles come bagged and slathered with crankcase oil as usual?

Hell yeah just finally caved and bought the can am combo. Been waiting forever for a even better reason to purchase. Appreciate all the posts from people on this thread.. Lotsa potential with these.

ya someone should start a thread on differences and pros cons on these things. like are the front sights now guaranteed to be straight with the navy sight?

The ONLY problem with my 2013 from Marstar? The rear sight aperture. The hole is off centre. But I plan on National Match sights anyway. Otherwise it was perfect.

Hope these ones from CanAm are the same.

All of you!

Don't buy one! :D

BUY TWO of them! You knew that was coming! If you are anything like Chalkriver, he bought THREE of them. He just cannot get enough.

I've got one already so I don't need any more, but surely many of you will be needing spare parts down the road by shooting these babies LOTS!

Cheers and keep helping out the noobs!

Barney

Actually I was up to # 4 again for awhile ...lol . With all the different ways to customize these up you need more than a couple.

Is there a kind gentlemen to confirm or deny with a High resolution picture that the barrel on the SOCOM 18 is chrome lined please?
Thanks.
The Norinco barrels have always been chrome lined, unlike the Springfield M1A's.On the T97's the barrels are hammer forged and chrome lined, while in the case of the M14's they are chrome lined but I do not think they are hammer forged. The Chinese have used chrome lined barrels for many years since they used corrosive primers when manufacturing ammunition for cost reasons until comparatively recently.

nothing personal, but this makes me wonder all the time about adds like yours. buy a rifle that's fully capable out of the box, and see what should I do,,, YOU SHOULD SHOOT IT. don't do anything to it until you clean it up and go shoot it. never know might just like it the way it is

"Very" well said
I expect I'll be extremely busy when I open the smithin shop back up in a month or so :D but I agree with Beater. Before you dive into the money pit and start altering your rifle... Clean every nook n cranny, wipe her down with CLP or seafoam deep creep. Grease the appropriate areas and go shoot a few hundred rounds to decide if you need to spend any money on anything but gas, ammo and targets :D

If it's M1A thread at muzzle, your only option is SEI as far as I know.
I might have to get one of these rifles and see what all the fuss is about but... Lookin at the pics and the fact it comes with a gas lock sight and a reversable muzzle device..... Canam has what appears to be a winner on his hands. :D

That's what I figured - I just wanted to confirm with the more knowledgeable members here. Also, does anyone have experience with the style of muzzle attachment that comes with the rifle?

Is it going to be super loud? Can I expect huge fire balls? Or will it actually suppress flash and direct noise downrange?

I should have mine soon , had to get in on this as I love those shortys , as far as using a different muzzle brake the threads on these come with a .595 x 32 thread .
I like the way this brake can be reversed and used as a shroud . I believe Brownells sells adapters but not to us Canucks.

I would be very interested in installing the same Socom18 Navy sight and muzzle "brake" on my m305 shorty(if they were available).....Barney are you listening? Enjoy the Clinic this wknd!

Well, I just couldn't resist anymore. I jumped on the canada ammo deal and bought a Norc shorty. Eventually will put it into a Blackfeather. I already have a Springfield M1A standard and I am very curious how they will compare. Winter has already hit here but I hope to do a very thorough side by side comparison come spring time....
