6 hunters mistakenly shot as deer hunting season begins, idiots among us

Well If you say so ......why would you start whining about people scrutinizing Police actions on this thread in the first place. Obviously someone has a complex (a core pattern of emotions, memories, perceptions, and wishes in the personal unconscious organized around a common theme) that needs to be addressed professionally.
Have a nice day!.....

I think it could be argued that in some ways, 'regular citizens' (as you put it), are trained to a higher level than most police officers. Police are well trained in the use of the firearms they use, as well as applicable laws surrounding use of force, and various scenarios regarding use of lethal, less-lethal, and non-lethal force. But for most, that's where it ends.

Hunters however, are trained in various firearms, numerous safety rules, including crossing fences, etc. Most hunters also have to pass hunter training courses, etc. The average hunter will have far more training regarding hunting, recognition of legal game, when and where they can shoot, and safe handling of their rifle.

A police officer will have none of that.

But, I can't think of 6 cases off the top of my head where Canadian police accidently shot 6 people they weren't intending to shoot. Especially in such a short period of time.... Although I'm sure someone will provide anecdotal evidence and stories, and maybe a few articles...

Nice day isn't it?

They aren't "accidents"......

It's sloppy, incompetent, negligent firearm handling/use and or careless/negligent judgement and decision making.

An accident is when a rock tumbles from a cliff and falls on you, a tree branch lets go and falls on you.
When a firearm is loaded with ammuntion, the muzzle gets pointed at something and the trigger pulled it aint no accident.
There are varying degrees of malice, negligence, stupidity, incompetence involved but it's not an accident when a firearm handled by a human goes off and strikes another.

Same goes for cars, chainsaws and medication.

Whether it's shooting at something misidentified, dropping a loaded gun, putting it away with a round in the gun, pointing it at someone as a "joke" its not an accident.
One or more of the basic fireams rules got violated....all guns are loaded/never cover anything yer not willing to destroy, never put yer finger on the bang switch till you want it to go bang.
As for when someone is shot misidentified or unidentified or in the heat of buck fever...well that's definitely no accident!

There's never been a case of a gun loading itself, covering something and pulling the trigger on it's own...takes a human to do that.
There's never been a case of a car fueling itself, turning itself on, driving itself down the rd and crashing into something...takes a human to do that.
None of these are "accidents"....inattentive, incompetent, negligent, malicious, careless, preventable....yes...but not accidental.

Funny....in the timeframes quoted by the media that the firearms "accidents" occured... a handful or so.....there would have been thousands of car "accidents" that resulted in far more grievous injury/death and damage......lil to no commentary made there.

Oh... and when the media do report on car "accidents" the commentary usually starts with " the car drove off the road, or the car collided with another car". Should start with "the human operating the car drove off the road, or the human driving the car colided with another car"

Accountability for ones action's.......

ugh... i think thats gotta be my worst fear is getting shot, you never know what kind of person you have hunting around you with a gun... thats why i wear full orange jackets, and a hat, glad no one was killed!

Same here orange pants, hat, gloves and jacket during gun season. Brother and I were shot at about 30 years ago stepping out from the brush on a pole line. Got real lucky the guy was a terrible shot and we must have been 350 yards away. However will never forget the sound of the bullet blowing the alder apart which was just in back of me.

Is this due to people flailing around during driven hunts? I can see how someone can be firing at a running deer and not realize that at some point there is another hunter on the other side of a bush 30 yards away. Not that it makes it ok by any stretch of the imagination - you should always know where the people who are pushing game are located, and vice versa with knowing where shooters are placed.

Bunch of idiots... wow. I had no idea so many get injured every year, I thought it was just a freak occurrence.

This is saddening, and frightening.

I think its amazing that 6 people can be shot with hunting rounds and still be alive. I won't let my wife and kids use the walking trails near town during hunter season.
When I was a kid, my buddy and I were setting out snares for rabbits, we heard the shot almost at the same time it hit my backpack. I was turned profile to the shooter so it just passed through my bag and took out a perfectly good can of vienna sausages. One more shot before it stopped and we were running and screaming the entire time. We called the police when we got to the corner store and they caught the drunk that afternoon. He was still in the area trying to find the moose that he had shot.

Its a freak occurrence in every province but here in Ontairo. Happens every year, but not nearly this much.

"...idiots among us..." More about the total lack of public ranges.
"...negligent discharge..." Cops are supposedly trained better and should be held to a much higher standard. The fact remains they are not trained better and consistently fail in basic safety precedures. Never did hear what was done about the London cop that was running through a residential neighbourhood discharging his firearm for no apparent reason.

Not referring to anyone here, but there is a reason, I stop coyote hunting, when I know Bubba is out shooting the 3 rounds he fires all year. Another month and the fields will be safe again.

None of these injuries are "life-threatening". I'm wondering if some of these are buckshot fired during drives as 1899 suggested. Those drives through small bushlots can be a wild scene when deer get spooked - lots of people firing lots of shots at running deer, including "hail mary's" - not always a disciplined affair.

Crazy don't they take the time to identify what the hell there shooting? Worse yet they probably shoot at anything. Some of them did sound kinda like freak accidents. Still that is bad either way :S

Keep in mind, without all the facts, all these incidents could be accidental discharges hitting their fellow hunter who happens to be standing right next to them.

I notice little muzzle control errors most when watching guys load or unload coming in and out of camp.
You take guys who only handle their firearms 1x week each year, are all amped up to get out to the tree stand, and little errors can become a big problem quickly.

Your probably right john dean Jeff cooper had some good ideas I guess..... There a good four to learn and practice

Yep, that's usually when it happens. I know a group of guys that have a couple of older "Tonys" in the group that fire multiple rounds off at noise. Recently, they heard them shooting and asked them if they hit a deer….."don't know, we justa shoot atta da noise". Yeah, I won't be hunting with them…….

There is another one this story didn't cover - my dad told me about one that was shot up in Huron County.

Edit:

It's stuff like this that makes me not want to go out during gun week. I am perfectly OK with the amount of holes that I currently have in my body. :D
