end of first week, first day in the bush chasing white tails, and i cant make up my mind; what should i bring- a shotgun or rifle?

other seasons were easy, always first day, deer are calm, good chance for close shot, this year i dont expect them to be so forgiving to our bush bashing, i think they will hit the afterburners as soon as hey have good idea who's coming

not to mentioned my party already been in our spot on Monday, and only one doe was seen, too skittish to get a shot on, just a flash
our spot has some wide clearings, some places a 200m+, and considring this year i only get two days off for hunt i dont want to loose a chance

so this is my dillema, thoughts?

dont see how but;
right now im between a Winny defender in 12ga and Lee Enfield sporty, usual cal.

going through some other threads now i think ill put Savage model 11 in .243, was suppose to be yote gun but what a heck, maybe it'll get lucky?

Hmm... Shotgun 0-100y (assuming rifled barrel/slugs), rifle 0-????yards. One seems to be more universal...

little edit;
if i had fallow throuigh on my intent (run out of time) and picked up some hunting ammo, i would have taken SKS with red dot, but since i dont have the ammo, ill let it rest

do you have any ammo for the enfield, may be nice to have another shot if needed. also, which one do you have better groupings with and how far are you comfortable shooting the shotgun out to?

if it was me i would take the enfield for sure.

solved my dillema last night, took Enfield (it was one of the choices, i wouldnt put something up as a choice if i didnt have ammo for it ;)) and im glad i did, dragging a 300lb+ bruin out of woods would have been more of a chore without it
almost lost my dog to the bear, dumb pup (5 months) tried to stare it down, nose to nose, im starting to wonder about people claiming Brittany Spaniels are intelligent :)
