Find the partridge!

Growing up my dad and uncles always used partridge and prairie chicken interchangably, as a generic term for these types of birds. He definitely knew the difference between partridge, ruffed grouse, sharp tail, etc. I guess it was just easier to say you were going out looking for chickens.

ya - calling ruffed grouse a 'partridge' seems to be an eastern thing for sure. The more experienced hunters can even tell the difference between a 'birch partridge' and a 'spruce partridge'. And lots of western folks tend to call sharp-tailed grouse 'prairie chicken'. No matter - they all taste pretty good.

Yup, more of an eastern thing I guess. Just for the love of Christ don't call them chickens. Only weirdos from Manitoba call them that. They also have a strange name for pike. Weirdos. :p

Probably the same reason that everyone around here calls a Walleye a Pickerel! Whats the reason? I have not figured that out yet...

Everyone around here calls them Pickerel. When I hear someone say Walleye I know they're either a) Not from around here or b) New to fishing.

I also hear some people here in NEO calling sharp-tails "Prairie Chickens".

Ruffed Grouse in NW Ontario area are called Grouse, Partridge, Chickens, Fools Hen. They don't fly much (dumb bird) so the locals swat them on the ground. Always find them on the logging roads 2-3 at a time. Yummy!!! We are starting to see a few Sharp Tail where they have logged out. They don't hang around for a second shot if you miss the first.

Hey, if you were in Saskatchewan you could hunt chickens while wearing a bunny hug. Now that's weird...
;)
