Much difference between M305 22" and 18.5"?

Accuracy has nothing to do with barrel length. Barrel length only affects velocity. A short barrel does seriously affect the muzzle flash and blast though. Way more of both. In any case, an 18.5" barrel on an M305/M1A is a marketing thing that was started by Springfield Armory.
"...Other then bayonet lug..." When? The bayonet lug is on the flash hider. If you want one on a short barrel, put one on. It's no crazier than putting one on a 20" shotgun. Mossberg did it, long ago. 8 shots, 20" barrel, bead sighted, M500, that took an M16 bayonet. We sold a bunch of 'em.

This agree with a research or experiement in a university in the US that was posted here. Regardless of ammo, factory or hand load it makes no difference between the 2 barrel lengths for up to 500 meters. The barrel lenght become relevant when shooting 1000 meters and up.

That is an interesting read. Thanks for linking it Steel.

Then you sir, have nothing to worry about! :)
You will need:
1x full length to put in nice boyds or USGI wood stock for your traditional look.
1x full length to put in a USGI glass stock, trust me you NEED this.
1x shorty to put in your blackfeather to fill the "little ass-kicker" slot in your arsenal.

You will also need 3x cans of brake cleaner and a nice sunday afternoon outside on what will be an epic cosmoline party!
And of course, we can assume you are picking yourself up 3x crates of the dirty old Norc steel cased ammo, these rifles don't like to share.

Have fun!

Where is a good place to buy replacement stocks from?

Just wanted too add that remember in the formula for kenetic energy velocity is squared so loosing 200fps of velocity equates to quite a bit of energy loss overall; even if downrange assuming your shooting a target means nothing more than faster drop of the bullet and making it more vulnerable to deviation by wind ect

Personally I like the long ones FWIW. Really just a matter of preference IMO though there do seem to be more problems with the shorties for whatever reason.

No noticeable difference, if you are talking about both lengths with the factory flash hider. At least not that I can differentiate.

Outdoors, I'd agree. Indoors, it depends on the port/shooting stall construction. An 18.5" barrel may not hang outside of the shooting stall. I do notice the difference, not in volume, but in blast.

Whats the best option for a scope mount? Arms 18? Or M14.ca mount? Do both let you remove the bolt while attached? The m14.ca chasm mount seems strange to me, only one place of attachment, but does anyone have experience with it?

Thanks for all the answers by the way.

CASM mount is solid. Over a thousand rounds through my Norc with this mount and have not had to touch it.

Six Inches - That is difference in overall length - The 22" barrel M14 is 44" overall, while the 18.5" shorty length is 41". The SOCOM shorty length is 40" or 38" if you reverse the flash hider.

Thanks man, it was edging out the ARMS mount because I heard you need to remove it to get the bolt out (Probably the only thing I am anal about it my life is cleaning my guns) And also, the people over at M14.ca seem really awesome and helpful, I will also happily support a company designing, machining and selling their product in Canada.
