Norinco M4 vs AR15 vs AR10 for first restricted semi auto

I'm having trouble making up my mind. Currently own a .308 and a .22lr both in bolt actions.

I love the .308 round but my current .308 is a noticeably heavy rifle (rem700 stainless steel heavy barrel) and I don't want to spend a lot of money for something that's basically a range toy.

However, I do like the idea of being able to share ammo between rifles and I feel like the AR-10 is something I'm going to get eventually anyway.

Should I extend my budget for the AR-10 or will I likely be happy with just an M4 or should I pick the middle road and go with the AR-15?
 
The M4 is an AR15. M4 is the designation of the configuration. (Meaning that the collapsible stock and shorter barrel etc...)
Good luck finding an AR10...from what I've heard they are kinda like a Unicorn. You hear of them and see pictures but have never actually seen one.
Get a Norinco M4 and M14 ...less money than the AR10 twice the fun because you have both the cals to play with.

Since Irunguns.com came to Canada this problem does not exist anymore.
 
We have two of the Norinco M4 rifles from Marstar. ZERO issues with them, they simply work. With the Norinco ammo we got from CanAm, it is a BLAST to hit the range with them!

perhaps skip restricted and check out the CQC version fo the M14

canada ammo has them, others do too....... $490 or so

There are many models of AR in 308. The AR-308 term usually includes all forms of AR done in 308. Parts are not always interchangeable like in an AR-15. The AR-10 that is available from Armalite now is not the AR-10 of the 60's. The main difference between families of AR-308 is usually differentiated with the magazine catch. 308 PMAG will not fit modern AR-10 family line. They will fit DPMS line of AR which includes the SR-25. All things being equal, it is better to go with a model that has easy to get PMAG magazines.

M-305 is an excellent choice but AR-308 is more ergonomic, more modular and it is easier to sit an optic on. While the weight itself may be very similar from target M700, a M-305 or an AR-308 (9-10 pounds), the weight distribution is very different. The AR-308 is much more balanced and more manoeuvrable.

I own a Norinco M-4, a SIG 716 and a M-305. My SHTF rifle is my Sig 716. It is one notch above the rest on all aspects (except the price…). From a ballistic perspective, the 308 is a world away from the 556 and the main reason why my norc M-4 is my wife’s gun…
 
Honestly if you're just getting going on the whole restricted rifle, I don't think there's a better way to start than a Norinco M4. Yeah, they're kind of raunchy on the finish side...but they're cheap, they run fairly well in my experience, and they take mags you can later use on other guns if you find you enjoy the AR experience enough to keep buying.
 
Shameless plug for my core15 great rifle you should buy it :p. No reason to buy norc anymore, you can get a smith & wesson m&p 15 sport for 30 bucks more at irunguns for a superior quality rifle.
