Hello guys,

I am looking to take my test but I would like to know what I should look out for and how extensive I need to read the book. I find that bird identification is really annoying, some say I should really focus on that.

Also does anyone know if there is a practice test I can try?

Thanks,

Troy

I wrote mine this past spring and YES learn the birds. There is a couple different versions of the test and one I got was 40% birds. I just passed with maybe two right answers to spare, lucky. Honestly i was very surprised how detailed it actually was.

I've read the whole book, I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything.
What is the buller dia. of the .270 Winchester round?
Read the book and read it again.
When you are done read it again, it can be dry reading, but it does cover lots of stuff.
Dabblers, Divers and Puddle ducks can be annoying I agree, but once you experience the rush of those wings youll be hooked.

The "test" isn't for a hunting licence but rather for the CORE card which is required before a BC Resident can purchase a hunting licence.
Thanks !

Do you think the Quebec's hunter certificate would make me exempt from passing the test ?

Hunter Number Card
A Hunter Number Card may be issued free of charge to a resident of British Columbia who has successfully completed the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) safety training examination (or provides proof of previous hunter safety training).

As I already have my PAL, I should be exempted of the handling test.

ps: in any case, I'll drop by Service BC and ask them tomorrow.

You should contact a BC Government Agent Office ( BC Access Centre) and ask them directly. I imagine if you have proof of passing the Quebec course you should be good to go. With that said when I moved out to BC many years ago they refused to acknowledge my Saskatchewan Testing and made me take the CORE course.

Individuals who have completed a hunter education program from another state or province in North America are exempt from the requirement to complete the CORE Program. Contact the Government Agent at BC Access Centres for more details on program exemption.

Thanks !

you may be able to pick up the book and challenge the test .

it has been over 30 years since I took my core test , but I am under the impression the gun handling part of the test isn't something that a person can be "exempted" from .

it isn't rocket science , but if by chance a person fails the gun handling section and get their licence because of some "exemption " , I don't want to be anywhere near them in the woods .

I'm originally from quebec and i got issued a hunter number card...before i got my licsense in Quebec i did a hunter safety course, you just have to prove you did one.

WTF ? Do you also need to know all the SAAMI specs ?

Back in '86 when I took the course there was a typo in the book.
It claimed the bullet dia. of the .270 Win is .270.
While in actual fact it is .277, hence my comment of read the book and then read it again.
If you want to pass the test with ease and our own personal satifaction then you will read the book.
But, if you just wanna pass the exam well then the rest is up to you.
Best Regards.
Rob

If you're worried about all the info in the book ... I can tell you that the test does NOT have any questions from the supplemental sections, so you can skip those. Yes, your hunting qualifications from another Province are recognized here, yes, you are exempt from the handling portion if you have a valid PAL (you'll need to bring it for proof). BS on the bird section being 40% of the test unless you're going back 15-20 years and even then, while birds was a larger section than today it was never 40% of any test, and there are currently four tests being used ALL of which have the same % representation of the sections (as in one test does not have more questions on birds than another).

I challenged it this year, piece of cake.

Be familiar with the current synopsis so you don't spend hours trying to find where it tells you it's ok to hunt bobcat with rimfire, exact dimensions of what's considered a tine, etc etc.

Know your safety (apparently they don't want you shooting from a vehicle for safety reasons, not for fair chase rules... BS, people shoot out of cars and moving helicopters all the time in other countries), and study up on your birds. They ask stuff like which grouse is most common in bc, what gallinaceous bird looks like what, yadda yadda.

Some questions are poorly phrased, like "what are ethics" with a choice between them being societally accepted or personal limitations... It's really both, but apparently ethics are a persons own restrictions on themselves, not societies agreed upon bounds.

Just challenge the bugger for 10$, and do it the next day if you fail. The course really doesn't teach much about how to actually hunt, just the safety and legal stuff.
