Find the partridge!

Growing up as a youngster I always heard the term partridge, in fact my Grandmother called Ruffed Grouse "birch" or "good" partridge. I have a buddy who calls them ditch chickens, lol! Personally I just call them tasty.
And anyone who could not find the bird in the top picture has never spent time walking old logging roads and bush trails looking for them!! ;)

I believe in NS they call the ruffed grouse a partridge.

In Labrador:
Spruce Grouse = spruce partridge
Ptarmigan = white partridge
Ruffed Grouse = French Hen

On the Island:
Spruce Grouse = spruce grouse
Ptarmigan = Partridge
Ruffed Grouse = Ruffed Grouse

I used to always refer to Ruffed Grouse as Partridge as well, because that is what I always thought they were since that is what everyone called them. When I got my hunting license, the course book had pictures of all the different types of game in it and that is when I realized what I thought was a Partridge was in fact a Ruffed Grouse. Then one year as I was looking through the hunting regs I noticed that the season for Partridge was much shorter than that for Ruffed Grouse (For 2013, Gray (Hungarian) Partridge: 20 Sept - 9 Nov. Ruffed & Spruce Grouse: 20 Sept - 15 Dec.) I now always refer to Grouse as Grouse and will correct people that refer to them as Partridge. I also call Walleye Walleye.

Pickerel in our country. What the heck does it matter what I call things? If the world stops turning, blame me. :p

My 5 year old daughter had seen many ruffed grouse I had brought home from hunting. We were up at the in-laws farm one day and her uncle and cousin came home from a short hunt. Asked if they had got anything they said we gat three "chickens". My daughter and i went out to see and she put her hands on her hips and said "Those aren't chickens, they are GROUSE"

I seen this one the other day when he got nervous and peaked around a tree at me. If he had just sat tight I would have walked on and not seen him.
