Looking for opinions of owners and past owners of the Ruger SR556.

Im looking at this as its legal in NZ and piston driven ( for purposes of suppression )
if you use a suppressor with a DI AR15 you get wicked gas blowback due to the over pressure caused by the suppressor.. even with eyepro, its worse than chopping onions holding the knife with your face.

so basically wanting to know how well your SR556's have worked with crap ammo, on the different piston settings.. etc etc etc

Haha that sums it up quite nicely.

1) dude you are asking the wrong crowd, we arent allowed suppressors.
2) if there is one piston gun I would not recommend it would be the ruger, overpriced and overrated, and underperforming.

Just get a 416. The only other piston I can contemplate recommending is pws. Be happy, buy quality, yes it will cost you more money. Spend it once enjoy for life.
 
I'm not that up on New Zealand firearms law. What is the reason you can't get a more purpose built piston driven rifle?

Or are you eying up the SR556 for other reasons outside of law, such as price, interchangeable AR accessories, etc?

SR556 works fine, just read review and youtube to find out, I almost pulled trigger to get one.
 
I've got one. Only got about 300 rounds of norinco spam can stuff through it so far but its worked every time. Kinda front heavy but its way easier to clean than a DI gun.
 
We're limited by choice over here. That said Reloaders have a SIG 416 and Sports ways have a CZ piston AR for-sale. Both are around $4,000 and E-cat (vs $2,400 for the SR556).

When you consider that a Norinco AR15 sells for NZ$2,000 its not so bad. This is the tax you pay for living in a country of 4 million people at the arse end of the planet ;)

Yes but at least we can hunt with our AR's and suppressors are a safety device :) I wouldnt swap NZ for any other country in the world ;)

Don't get me wrong, I won't want to live anywhere else either. Not many places left where shooters can still own live full-autos, AR-15s, AK-47s etc, use standard capacity magazines in our semi-autos, use suppressors, shoot pistols. No hunting licences required, only fishing licences for trout, very few private beaches and so on....

Doesn't change the fact that shipping costs and a smaller market means we end up paying more for many goods.

I have the SR556E model and have put several types of ammo through it. It had no problems cycling. I am going to try some MFS steel case stuff this weekend to see how it likes it.

So far the gas port set at the 1 position, the smallest, won't let the rifle cycle far enough to strip a round from the magazine with most ammunition I have used so far. The other settings work fine.

If I understand the platform correct setting 1 is meant for suppressed use and likely why it won't strip a round from the mag.
