As for steel core, is there rubber in the backstop? If there is, that might be the reason for no steel core.

Possible.. Not too familiar with range design, but our backstop is rated for whatever you can throw at it. I wish I could say the same of the target hangers, rails, steel cables, walls and floors, but that's why we got cameras.. So those responsible are held responsible.. Irresponsible shooting/piss-poor marksmanship don't come cheap
Just curious has any one replaced the primer on surplus and used it effectively? Don't know how the surplus cases (not brass) would hold up or if its even possible/compatible. Lot of work but removing the corrosive ones might but a fruitful task... So it looks like 308 is ok, . but 310 - 311 is better for projectile???

Surplus ammo uses a Berdan primer, which is a PITA to reload. i have done it for calibers where I have no choice, but since Boxer primed brass is readily available for both 7.62x25 and 7.62x39, buying boxer brass for reloading is the way to go.

The Hornady die set gives both neck expanders for .310 (Russian SKS etc) and .308 (Ruger mini-30s) bullets. I've loaded with .310 Hornady VMAX with no problems and even tried the .311 150 grainers. If you're into plinking, it's probably cheaper to go with non-corrosive Wolf ammo from Budget Shooter Supply (Henry's got it pretty cheap and you don't have to worry about cleaning your rifle/gas system immediately).
Another good option for plinking rounds (indoors or out) is cast bullets. A properly sized cast bullet quite often will shoot as well or better than mil surplus. SKS gas system doesn't seem to "gum up" either

I've reloaded X39 and found its a waste of time to load for my SKS. The rifle is too hard on brass and the sks is not really capable of shooting moa. My CZ527 is another story, however with the quality and accuracy of PRVI ammunition it is difficult to load better than something that already shoots through a dime at a hundred yards. I did play with some heavier bullet weights with some success, but for my time and effort comparing whats available on the market, its not really worth my effort. I reserve my reloading time and energy for larger calibers where there is better savings and accuracy to be had.
palomine needs to buy and read the reference section in a good reloading book(recommend Lyman(#49?)). Ask a fellow club member to show you how it works(any caliber). I found lee dies to be a PIA for 7.62X25, lee flaring tool wasn't uniform and short bullets(71-85 gn) would tip and bulge the neck.
You couldn't have looked very hard.
Most of the major die manufacturer will have the correct dies for both calibers and all dies are cross compatible with all presses. Choose a die set and a press ... whichever you like, doesn't really make much difference.
The first thing you should do is buy a reloading manual and read it. I know it is difficult in this day and age of instant gratification via the inter webs but that'd answer every question you have. Some of us even learned to reload from a book waaaaaay before the internets ever existed.
OAL is determined by what length fits the magazine. For my Tokarevs, I use an OAL similar to milsurp. For my 1911, I use an OAL more like a 38 Super to fit the shorter mag.

Sierra 220gnRN .308, 6-11gn Unique. Subsonic 760fps to 1080fps in NS. (low end would not operate gas mechanism, high end would, but not every time).
Mexican match 125gn Hornady shot 3 deer.
Mexican match 150gn Hornady, removed 2gn original powder (worked in my rifle). Powerhouse round from the SKS.
Mexican match 174gn RN Hornady, removed 3.5gn powder. 1960 fps.
Currently, if using SKS for hunting, I will not use commercial brass unless I remove the operating rod. Don't like losing hard to get brass.
I only use PRVI (125gn @ 2435fps from my rifle) in my 799 since it is the best way i know to get good brass and I can shoot a fair bit at under $1 a round. They have accounted for their share of deer, but once I have a couple of hundred rounds, I will switch to 150gn to extend my range. Right now, range and shot placement are CRITICAL with it.
