NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

To be honest i'd like one even if finish would be uneven, but shipping out of index rifles is beyond my motivation to spend

Fact that you tried and didn't work just convinced me out of this. I hate paying twice for stuff, might as well save up for a garand or a springfield in my case. Getting an out of index rifle would piss me off real bad.

yep...mine is out allot and because it's not a warranty issue I have to pay for return shipping.....Last Norplinco for me....:(

My flash hider was busted right through the packaging, had to ship Canada post to get it back to them, I had to drive to it too. I asked to be given a different rifle, stay tuned for the update. As for the other two I got, both the bolts line up very poorly with the gas chamber, will take them shooting and see what happens.

Bolts lining up with the gas chamber? Are you talking about the op rod?
Lots of people coming to the M305 platform it seems.

It is important to remember that most of these issues are relatively easy fixes.
Attending your local M14 clinic is a great way to gain the skills you need to make these rifles sing.
It's worth it.
If you're not into tinkering, and expecting perfection, the next stop is a Springfield for 3x as much money.
Or, just wait for a tuned one to show up on the EE for 2x the price.
I enjoy it myself.

Just got mine , it has perfect indexing , perfect gas lock timing and a perfectly centered sight , just had to stake the op rod guide . i have owned 10 in my day most all years and this is overall the best along with my 2009 bell lifestyle polytech.

Same exact story here on the condition of mine but I have only had 6 of these lol ....and this is the nicest one yet.
I had to peen under the op rod guide and its good to go.

Hey guys so what does it mean when the indexing is out, how does it affect the rifle, and is it fixable? All the talk about the indexing has my head spinning

must be nice....If only Canam took rifles out of the bag and check them over before shipping them out. They open the box to put targets in so why look at what they are selling ????

HeavyT ..The barrel is screwed onto the receiver , when its isn't screwed in enough it is called under indexed .And if its screwed in too far its called over indexed.
Improper indexing will make your front sight lean left or right on reg sighted M-305 .But not these ones as it has a gas locking ring with a front sight mounted there.
As well the gas port in the barrel should be at the 6:00 postion to line up with the gas system.
To fix an improperly indexed rifle isn't hard but you require a barrel vice.....get to one of TacticalTeachers clinics and you can fix it your self if needed.

I love the "look" of the M14. Unfortunately, the Springfield copies are too costly for my needs. (Occasional plinking at the range)
When the m305 shorties came out I knew I wanted one but held off because of all the negative QC issues and required "fixes". Like many here, I'm not much of a tinkerer.
Long story short....I found a BNIB m305 shorty that received the Tactical Teacher treatment (Barney) and was happy to pay him. For a sub-$500 rifle the fit and finish is acceptable for a shooter vs being a safe queen.
I think if all the new m305/Socom18's went thru Testical Teacher's hands first he could have a nice little business going and a lot of happy newbie owners. I know I would buy another....

Don't forget some of the barrel indexing issues were actually poorly machined front sight bases on the flashhider.
