NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

Thanks chalkriver, so it sounds like the indexing isn't as big a deal as I though it was

If its off enough, it can cause the op rod to bind up on the barrel flange near the receiver. It IS an easy fix though if you have access to a heavy work bench and a barrel vice.

An M14 clinic by Tactical Teacher is prettry much mandatory after purchase for those new to the M14 if you're not handy or lack workspace

It is important to remember that most of these issues are relatively easy fixes.
Attending your local M14 clinic is a great way to gain the skills you need to make these rifles sing.
It's worth it.
If you're not into tinkering, and expecting perfection, the next stop is a Springfield for 3x as much money.
Or, just wait for a tuned one to show up on the EE for 2x the price.
I enjoy it myself.

How would I go about finding one of these clinics? I am in the same area as you.

Ordered one this passed week and just waiting on shipping confirmation. I've always liked these rifles and if prices are actually going up then this is the time to buy. Anyone know of M14 clinics around Calgary?

must be nice....If only Canam took rifles out of the bag and check them over before shipping them out. They open the box to put targets in so why look at what they are selling ????

I dont think that would be feasible for a company to do with Norinco products and still keep the price low , these things are covered in grease and to take them apart and inspect them would take alot of man hours , Yes it has always been a bit of a gamble with all norinco stuff but the just M305 receivers alone would sell like hot cakes in the US for the price we pay for the whole rifle so we cant complain too much .. Norincos have always been a tinkerers gun .

There may not be a clinic in S. Alberta for a while...Tactical Teacher is busy next summer, and the .45ACPking [formerly M14doctor] has no firm plans to take up the slack, although I believe I read he's considering it...

Keep an eye on http://www.tacticalteacher.ca/ and the Battle Rifle forum here...there is usually lots of advance discussion and warning about clinics.

HeavyT ..The barrel is screwed onto the receiver , when its isn't screwed in enough it is called under indexed .And if its screwed in too far its called over indexed.
Improper indexing will make your front sight lean left or right on reg sighted M-305 .But not these ones as it has a gas locking ring with a front sight mounted there.
As well the gas port in the barrel should be at the 6:00 postion to line up with the gas system.
To fix an improperly indexed rifle isn't hard but you require a barrel vice.....get to one of TacticalTeachers clinics and you can fix it your self if needed.

wouldn't unscrewing your receiver in the case of a over indexed barrel affect your headspace ?

Barney has been out to Calgary before. There are a few around the area with a ton of M14 knowledge as well.

Thank you both. I'll keep an eye out for these.

True, but why, oh, why, can't the the factory just make sure they're properly indexed? Would it really kill their productivity to just line it up properly???

Are you talking about the same company that is about to jack the prices up on these things just cuz they know we buy them? Its China, they are not in it to keep us happy, they just want our cash :D

I agree. Considering how easily gauging proper index would be during the barrel installation process, it's somewhat mysterious to me why this continues to be a problem. Yeah, they may just want our money, but if the manufacturer absolutely didn't care about quality, their products would be _uniformly_ crappy...not just throwing out the occasional lemon. Obviously they are not quite clear on the concept of quality control...

That's not really a fair comment. Chinese manufacturing is modernizing fast, and part of that is developing a better trained, and better paid workforce. Maybe you're too young to remember the days when the quality of Japanese products was a joke, and look where they are now...top quality and high prices. I have no doubt that the M305 rifles are costing more and more to produce...the same thing is true with a lot of Chinese products. Fortunately nobody _needs_ to buy one of these rifles, and there's lots of choice if you want to move over to a surplus Russian rifle, and that will hold the price of the M305 down at least a bit.

It's supply and demand... In the overall scheme of things capitalism and industry is a great process, but it doesn't magically make our wishes come true...

All 3 were proprely indexed, did change all 3 op spring guide for the SA NM ones, that all il'l do to them, just adjust the sights and shoot away, next Sunday 2 of my older grandsons will start their M-14 shooting, one is 13, one is 14... Looking forward to see their face when they do... JP.
