Went to the range to try out my new m14/305 after it's degrossing and such. The irons were pretty much bang on but had to come up a bit. I started wit some fed fusions in 150 and theses seemed to group about 2-3" at 50 yards so I figured I'd throw the scope on and get that dialled in. Nope way off like 2' off to the high side so off it came and back to the irons. Shot a couple 5 shot groups with the hornady zombie max ammo and aside from 1 in each group it was doing 4 shots in a tight cluster at 1" with one shot out to make them each 1.2 and 1.5" groups. I am not a proficient iron shooter so with practice I think this will be a good shooter and now that the scope mount has been remounted and the front dropped down I need to try it out again and see where she's at.

I would take it easy with the 168gr. hunting ammo in the M305. These rifles are designed to shoot ~150gr. military ball, and heavier bullets and velocities may accelerate wear on your op rod and gas components.
I believe there are adjustable gas plugs that will compensate for more heavy-duty ammo, so you might want to look into that. Just FYI...your rifle won't blow up or break down with just a few rounds of Z-max...

Okay... I'll be sticking with 7.62x51 ball ammo just the same, but then I don't see the M305 as a hunting rifle.

Welcome to the M-14 club. These rifles are not bad shooters out of the box if you look at what a rack grade M-14 in the US aRmy was expected to achieve with 762NATO ball. There are a few DIY tweaks you will learn from the stickies and the forums as well as taking in any M-14clinic near you by Tactical Teacher(Hungry).
It's nice to see what a rifle can do in absolute accuracy terms with a good mount, big glass, and a solid bench rest but only to establish an accuracy baseline for the shooter to work towards in all positions unsupported. These rifles are among the best thing you will find to shoot over irons and like in Katana's case, learn to do it properly, and you will be a very satisfied rifleman indeed. The Rifles are cheap, bulk ammo is relatively cheap, I can't think of a better rifle in your inventory to become a great iron sight shooter with.

This Sucker is still essentially bone stock aside from the promag scope mount. I have a S&J hardware oprod guide inbound but after that I'll just see how it all works. Not a big fan of shooting from a rest thus far but I will try to use mine for the optimal groups lol.
