None required. Coyote attacks on humans are so extremely rare that preparing for one is absurd. I have never personally heard a reliable story about a coyote attack on a human. I have read some accounts online, but again they're so rare it's silly to consider.

Probably more reasonable for you to focus on realistic threats such as being lost or injured while in a remote location. Therefore use the space to carry extra water, a compass and matches or other type items.

Watch a few ceasar milan dog whisperer episodes. Body language is your best defense. You show fear or run with any predator, you are instinctively seen as prey.
You will have more of a chance of getting bitten by a neighborhood poodle or zombie africanized honey bees (as someone above has mentioned) than a coyote.

If a teenage girl from Ontario can kill a bear with a 3 inch knife, what are you doing worrying about a coyote that may or may not be your neighbours untrained dog...

We have a young tall lanky Rottweiler that can run like the wind. Since getting her I have had zero issues with coyotes around the chickens. I guess now we not only will have multiple "bear defence" threads but also "coyote" ones as well. Paranoia seems to be a mental disorder expanding into our culture, take heart there are medications and treatment available at your local gun shop.
