Went to WSS last night to look for CCI SV, and grab some '06 ammo before the sale is over. Ended up with nice 1943 mosin for $143. It's my first milsurp, I was going to grab a SVT after Xmas but this one wanted to come home, I wasn't overly picky on any specific type, just no repairs in the stock. I think this is a good start, I have a feeling there will be more...

I just picked up the last hex receiver at the Winnipeg store. 1936 Tula, great deal! We'll see how the bore looks after a scrubbing. Only detriment is the non matching bayonet serial number. Other than that, it's not quite as pristine as the 1935 I got from Westrifle, but no visible dents or dings and the wood colours all match with a fairly even application of Russian Red. Ammo is still 15% off for a couple more days too don't forget.

I take a rod and run a few dry patches through in the store. Knocks out enough old oil and crud to give you an idea of bore condition without it being a crap shoot. Any store that doesn't appreciate you giving their filthy surplus guns a good natured cleaning, with a little light banter on the side, doesn't deserve your business. There's one in Winnipeg like that...

I didn't look at the Winnipeg WSS mosins, since I don't really need one, and the fellow said he'd cleaned a bunch and most were pretty rough. They did have some pre-1930 stuff, though, and even a dark bore will shoot milsurp ammo when the crud is out of it.

PS - anyone visiting Winkler MB should go to Dominion Outfitters in the mall there. They have some of the Westrifle guns, as well as some rough stuff. I passed on an utterly pristine bore 1943 izzy in a nice post war stock, mostly because I grabbed a 1936 izzy that was on sale for less (and looked better than the roughly machined war time high wall rifle).
and if they hadn't let me clean the barrels, that '43 would have looked like corroded ####e to the next guy to see it ;)

Yeah, all I could tell at the store was that the rifling was still strong. The rest of it is in very good shape so I took a chance on the old girl at that price. Guess we'll find out after dark tommorow, I brought it up to deer camp for a good degreasing.

I went to see them at my location after seeing this post saw 5 of them and must say they are really worth $143. They were all junk, repaired stocks when I used my own 30 cal bore snake the bores were all frosted and worn down. They looked like they retreated from Brest Litovsk back to Moscow and went from Moscow to Berlin and also chased Japanese in Manchuria. Then were stored reissued in Korea, refinished afterwords and stored to be sold to Canadians

I just noticed they have $99 91/30s in the States again. Makes me wish we had that purchasing power up here.

Just ran a couple a couple patches through it and the bore looks strong. Stock is good, have to give a good scrubbing to determine the rest, all numbers match except bayonet. Ill see how it shoots. If it shoots good then it may be a candidate for an archangel stock, then ill look in to getting a real nice one later on. Something to play with for now. They had 6 and this was by far the best of the bunch, didn't have much time to pick each one apart, but it wasn't hard. The one they had on the rack was a bit rough. its a good thing my buddy just got a crate cus ill have wait till after xmas to get one now

Frankly I was shocked to find one that actually HAD a matching numbers bayonet. That's the '43 I left behind. Would have bought it, but I'm saving up in the hopes of finding a VG Finn M39.

You really can't beat Westrifle Mosin, they look unused

Let me start by saying I have had lots of good rifles from Westrifle.
Having said that, the last one I bought was the worst shape Mosin I have ever had. The bore is rotten (I am not particular at all usually) with pitting. Also the stock and handguard is a full inch shorter than any other 91/30 I have ever owned ?. So basically I got a Bubba special. This will be my last rifle from them. It is not worth the price of shipping to send it back.

SVT40 are on sale for $200 at Lever Arms til Christmas btw, if you're still thinking about it. A lot of them have repaired stocks though.

First I have heard of a stumpy 91/30 stock. What year is it?

I have an M44 with a hardwood stock and one with a laminated one, and one rifle (i forget which) is at least an inch shorter than the other. The butt is longer on one of them. I thought that interesting.

The pre-1930 rifles are interesting because you know that you've got an ex-dragoon rifle rebuilt to 91/30 spec rather than a gun that rolled off the line as a 91/30.

Mine is a 1928 Izhevsk with a czarist receiver in a 1935 Tula stock. I wonder when and how many times it was refurbed in it's life? Twice at the very least - in 1928, and again whenever it was updated to 91/30 spec. It might have gotten the stock in '35, or it might be a post war parts bin job.

Picked up a Tula 1933 HEX matching numbers and a Izhevsk 1937 Round Reciever force matched but in very nice shape.... 151$ a piece.. Hell can't go wrong.

Badass rifles, built like tanks. Watched that 2 part torture test on youtube, they can take a major beating before failing.
