M16A1 M7 Bayo is it suppose tobe sharp?

Mine came super sharp. I think its more useful as a knife that way but I don't know if it is "supposed" to be that sharp. I haven't cut myself yet but I don't really use it for anything.
 
Bayo's are supposed to be dull, the idea being to poke a big nasty hole into the enemy so he bleeds out faster.

But....since none of us will be doing that, feel free to put an edge on it and use it as a cheese knife.
 
The C1 bayonets were dull, but I remember the C7's (same as the US M7) coming sharpened. Not razor sharp, but not blunt edged like the C1.
It is not supposed to break off in someone. You're supposed to use it more than once, which is why you're only issued one.
 
I think the US had a different approach to the bayonet than the Brits/Commonwealth. Theirs were field knives as well as bayonets.

Fairly dull, but not blunt edged. It will cut you but it is not razor sharp like I said above. It is no where near as blunt edged like the C1 (or SMLE) bayonets that we had earlier. Like J996 said, a true bayonet should be dull for best effect. However, troops have a habit of sharpening them thinking it will work better.

The new C7 bayonet\field knife\wire cutter is issued with a very sharp blade and a sharpening stone on the scabbard.
 
I bought a bunch of m7's and m9's at Fort Lewis , Washington a few years ago. Most of them were sharp. The m7's were ex National Guard and the m9 were Army issue. You don't see these
around there anymore. Was a good place to go to add to the bayonet collection. At one time they had lots of m14 bayonets also.
 
I bought a surplus m7 years ago--it was sharp!! I bought an M9 shortly after they first came out (very expensive). This one was so sharp I could shave the hairs off my arm just by lightly scraping it.

One guy told me that sharpened bayonets were against the Geneva Convention. I don't believe it.

It's false.

I have read that during WW1 one, or both sides (I forget) would execute soldiers found with saw tooth backed bayonets used by pioneer troops, thinking that they were unusually cruel due to the teeth. I don't know if this is true or just war time folklore.
 
No regs on sharp or not,user preference I sharpened all mine as they doubled as field knives,some guys didn't. The newer issue C7A2 Bayonet 2000 is supposed to be sharpened and used as a knife.
 
Sharp bayonets can get stuck in bones easier( or so they say) so that why they are usually dull and if they are to be dull they can make them with cheaper steel and save money.

Lol that totally depends on your SSM/RSM... And the mood he is in ;-)

Typically not sharpened due to potential accidents while on parade... "Shoulder Arms!.... Oops.... Why is Smith's Ear bleeding?" Lol. But that is a peace time Army thing.
 
M7/C7 BAYONETS are generally sharp and will have a fairly keen edge and sharp point, I have several brand new Colt mfg. M7's, US G.I. M7's and Diemaco C7 bayonets, all very sharp, sharp tip. The C1a1/ L1a1 bayonets were issued dull. You could check and see if some over enthusiastic bubba sharpened it on a stone by checking the Parkerizing been removed down to bare metal. g2
