I was out hunting yesterday morning in a spot that I had found deer turds last week. Figured, If I wait here, I'll probably find some deer. I was out there at 5:30am sitting in frosty cold grassy ditch still pitch black out. Dawn had struck at about 6:30 and I was already hearing rustling in the bushes. The rustling got closer and closer and finally, I see the face poke up from behind a bushes. When I fired, he was no more than about 40 yards away. I already believe that hunting in thick British Columbian forests doesn't require a scope and now, a 40 yard shot confirms that. My scope was only set of x3 for that shot. Anyways, Its the first deer I've taken with my new CZ 550 LUX .270, Please don't laugh when you see how small are west Vancouver Island Blacktail deer is. Only a 2 pointer but I'm not a trophy hunter. Horn soup doesn't taste good at all.

I wish I could of taken a better photo but my auto focus and my flash wasn't co-operating. I actually forgot to pick my knife up when I was putting him in the back of the truck so the next time I'm out there grouse hunting, I'll remember to pick the knife up. I know where it is and I'm sure no one will see it. Its just a $30 knife so its not worth the $30 in gas to drive out there and get it. If anyone is hunting in region 1-7 and finds a stainless steel folding knife with a 2" blade and is crazy razor sharp with a fake peal handle, that is mine.

OK dude, if that was you in my wife's veggie garden this morning, you're in big trouble - unless you tell her you work for Oak Bay (you could get away with that)

On a more serious note, I really get a kick out of guys who think a big scope is necessary for hunting the forests here, most shots could be made with nothing more than an Aimpoint for low light. Also, the really big boys are at the Golf Courses, they know you can't touch them.

Very nice. I was on the island at the end of October and I really miss it. We turned the corner towards the frozen tundra here in Calgary a couple of weeks ago.

Nice deer and a lovely rifle. I really like CZ's.

Glad to hear there are actually some places to hunt on Vancouver Island, too. Beautiful place to be.

Most people avoid hunting around here. Kind of nice when you're the only one of few who don't mind bush bombing a bit to find some tracks and not have to worry about someone shooting at you because they heard rustling sounds.

Vancouver Island seems to be super popular to the rest of Canada. Us Vancouver Islanders take it all for granted. When I was in California, I meet a lot of people who loved Vancouver Island and a lot of them in particular liked Tofino and Ucluelet.

I worked for Oak Bay twice actually. April Point and Canadian Princess.

Lost of people question me for using a 2.5-8x32 compact scope on a "long range rifle." I just tell them, are thick Vancouver Island forests don't permit shots further than 100 meters and all you really need is a fixed x4 scope. Besides, there isn't much of a difference from x8 to x9.

Your choice of optics makes perfectly good sense to me as any of my scopes are usually carried on a low setting, my 1.5X5s are set about 3X and my 3X9s probably never over 5 or 6X unless being used off a bench at the range.
For many years most of my rifles wore either a 2.5X or 4X scopes.
