He says it is a model 29 with a serial number that is S184### he states it is a Stainless gun I have seen a picture and yes it looks stainless but I can not find any info online that states they made a 29 in stainless I am also looking at what year it was made I only found this info on a site
S182,000 – S194,499……Late 1958 – Early 1959 But My friend says it was bought new later then that I am lost
No it is not a 629 already asked

One option, is it could be a model 29 in NICKEL, as appose to stainless. I am not sure they (S&W) ever made a stainless model 29, until they did and called it a 629. But stranger things have happened in the gun world.

If it's shiny or has that mirror finish (or it appears it was once there) it is likely a nickel model. They can look fantastic, but over time the nickel can deteriorate and almost get bubbly (like a zinc on a boat). At least from a few I have seen that were not maintained or cared for properly.

It's a nickel plated 29, on a 629 the sights, trigger and hammer are stainless, the sights, trigger and hammer on the picture are black like a factory nickel plated gun.

From the serial#, the gun was mfg in late 1958 early 1959, definitively not a 629 and not stainless.

There ya go!

I have both a 686 and a 629, both are stainless with black adjustable sights, both are limited edition 'Hunter Classic' models with smooth cylinders (no grooves), full underlugs and hogue grips. Nice shooters.

S&W doesn't make the S&W Model 29/629 anymore, except for limited production runs. None in stock according to the NRA American Rifleman magazine.
