.338 Federal???

I wont have alot of shots on big game over 300 yards. Even tonight i found myself shooting at a coyote, I didnt range him at first, shot at him (guessing a 140 yard shot), missed, shot him on the run at what i figured 150-175 yards...he slid 5 feet when i shot him and died and I ranged him at 230. So the 250-300 yard shots do happen more then what a guy thinks. Maybe a .338 federal isnt the answer?

Or here in BC. Ranges on my last three deer were 40 yards, ~320 yards and ~340 yards. You've got to look at your own circumstances. There is a reason why the .35 Rem is popular in the Eastern woods but you hardly ever see one out West.
 
Yeah the .338 Federal.... well in my opinion of the cartridge is its a nice cartridge which slots inbetween the 308 and 358win, gives a little here an loses a little there.
For a stalking rifle for say Sambar or even Elk I think its a top choice, my choice would be a 35 Whelen though. and others would say 300wm, 7RM an so on.. but we all know a .270 would be suffice..

A reloaders cartridge by all means down under, but as said above , to a reloader ammo isn't an issue.

I want a 35 remington in one of those Model 8/81 or 14/141. But then again, I mostly hunt the timber, since I prefer to be by myself.
 
The only concern I have with the 338 Fed is that, as far as I know, reloading bullets in .338 are generally designed for the 338 Win Mag.

Other than that, I think it is one of the more interesting cartridges released in the past 20 years.
 
I think the real crime of the. 338 Federal is that it is " new"

Gor the most part it fills a role similar to a 30-06. If it interests you , and you can handload for it , no reason not to own one. Its not like the animals wont die.

I've never understood how that makes sense; I can send a package 1000 km's East for $15, but to go 500 km's West costs $30????

Maybe the prevailing West wind doubles the gas expediture...
 
My $0.02 on the .338 federal. Seems like a great idea, mor punch than a .308 at close range, so great for ontario moose. If you have bags of cash, get one. If not, your 308 or /06 is just fine.

Moose hunting is very limited here so get ready to do some WT deer hunting and grouse.
 
"...worth buying?..." Find ammo and brass first. Even if you don't reload now, buy as much brass as you can, dies and a shell holder when you buy the rifle. The assorted marketing depts can and do drop cartridges with no regard for their existing customers regularly. Having brass, dies and a shell holder means you'll never be caught with a rifle and no ammo.
"...which is dang near a 8mm Mauser..." And? Nothing special about the 8mm Mauser.
