Alright im looking to buy a new .308 bolt action with a wood stock. price range is around 500-1500 maybe higher if it would make a big difference. suggestions?

$500 to $1500 covers a whole lot of rifles. Where bolt action rifles are concerned I've started to develop a liking for "control round feed" rifles. Which would be CZ,
the M77 Hawkeye Rugers I believe, the new Model 70 Winchesters, Zastava etc. I find the control round feed rifles are less prone to feeding jams when things
get exciting.;) Good Luck.

Well - you're going to get lots of advice - most of it will be of little use unless you tell the crowd what you intend to do with the rifle...
+1 and where your going to use it.
I use a Tikka T3 stainless synthetic in 308 from Northern Labrador to North West Ontario and down to central Ontario. Light Accurate tough but not real pretty but thats what I look for in a rifle

If you are Police or Military there is an exclusive Savage package on offer with a couple of CGN dealers for about $600. No scope, but it is a good place to start.

... or a Remington Model Seven CDL. Topped with a VX2 2x7, it would be perfect for most hunting.

Some great choices here and the same ones I would consider.

I really like my older Husqvarna lightweight with factory 20" barrel, and iron sights. Shoots great, handles better, and is even classier then me if you can believe it :)

If you find a nice used one, it'd still be new to you.

I vote Winchester Featherweight if you must go brand new.

Have a look at a Remington 700 CDL SF in around the 900 mark so you still have 600 left over for a somewhat decent scope.

I've been shooting a vintage Winchester Model 70 XTR in .308 a lot lately. Not exactly new, but very accurate and a heck of a lot of fun to shoot. They're usually under $600 used and in good condition. My .22 seems to have more recoil than this .308!

Heres my baby. Ruger M77, .308 WIN, topped with a Leupold 2x7

God I love this gun.
