DA Socom 18 bolt/receiver lug issue

If you're worried about them not having another in stock, email them those photo's and tell them you will be exchanging the rifle. I've never dealt with CanAm but I've heard they are easy to deal with when it comes to these kinda things.

Also this thread caused me to take a look at my recent 2013 Marstar 305. To which I found this. Empty chamber. All I've done with this thing is strip grease it and fire 10 rounds through it. Never really closely inspected it. Now I'm kinda pissed.

That sucks man, I was hoping I was the only one... is your left receiver lug looking like it's on an angle??
 
going back n forth between photo's ... they look very similar in gap size .. wow

I heard marstar has a decent warranty and they'll take back stuff.. ...



@ C Canuck ... this isn't a game, quit goofing around ... did you see the pic's Ardent put up !! those pictures should speak volumes
 
Funny how everyone was ranting and ravig about how good the socom18 will be. The regular shorties were better than these. My op rod is tight, no bolt gap, the only thing wrong was the flash hider is off centre. Just because these are for canam doesnt change the fact these are built by te same people

Exactly, but I expect the few problems mentioned here are the exceptions, not the norm...

The left lug not making any contact is not the norm in my experience.....all the other issues are pretty much the norm...under or over indexed barrels, loose op-rod guide, crooked flash hider or crooked front sight, soft metal rear sights, excessive headspace, roughly finished.....;)

and by few problems mentioned here I of course only meant the lack of left lug contact... all that other $h@t is of course normal! hahaha
 
Now are these problems with the bolts? Or out of spec receivers? I'm past Marstars 30 day return policy. So I'm hoping a new bolt will fix it. Either USGI or Fulton. Serves me right. I avoided these things like the plague because of them being Chinese junk. Then I finally caved. And it's a $450 paperweight.

Hard to say, someone that knows m14's would have to do some measuring on it.
 
Well just to chime in I was on the fence myself because of the various issues, but I took the time to read everything and bought local where I could inspect prior to buying. The Chinese are not big on quality control, close enough is good enough, so you have to pretty much do a through inspection when you 1st receive your rifle.

Still it would be nice if the retailers had the resources to give them a once over, for the really bad issues like these.
 
Just my opinion, but the retailers HAVE the resources to inspect these guns before they sell them.
How long would it take a knowledgeable dealer to check something so simple as bolt to receiver fit ?
These aren't just examples of low quality finish, which is understandable at the price , these are safety issues of the highest order.
I'm pretty certain if this had been a US dealer and customer there would have been huge lawsuits flying around.
I might be old fashioned but the dealers have a degree of responsibility and no one can deny that there are certain things that should be inspected on all these 305s even when new.
In that light it is inexcusable that the dealers sell these guns without even a rudimentary inspection.
 
Thanks to RememberTheSomme for the help with this! Just stopped by his place and checked a few things. His bolt fit better in my receiver but still seems a gap at the left lug. My bolt went into his receiver and there is a gap. Did some loose measurements with some feeler gauges and calipers and looks like my left bolt lug is shorter than his and also looks like my left receiver lug is cut short and on a very noticeable angle. Combination of both makes for bad news. Still waiting to hear from canam so I'll probably miss out on the socom because they're almost out of stock:( oh well.

Looks like a few others on here have also had a gap in the left lugs. I know they're not all lemons as some people are suggesting and I hope everyone gets fixed soon!
 
I am sorry for your troubles, however CANAM is a very good to deal with and I am sure they will resolve the issues for you. I unlike many of the people who post comments in regards to Norinco's products, which I have owned a considerable number have always been very satisfied, since I believe they offer very good value for the money. The M14 is a difficult rifle to manufacturer because of the number of machining operations, irrespective of the manufacturer and this becomes apparent if you read the comments on the US forums. I liked how you checked the spacing on the left lug with a light, since it is very apparent that there are serious issues with this rifle which I have not seen on any of the M14's and M1A's that I have owned. I look forward to hearing how this was resolved by CANAM.

I am a skeptic on these rifles and I don't think there are more bad than good. My gut feel is that maybe 20% have significant issues, which is far less than half. Unfortunately, it is also more than enough to keep me on the sidelines, with a 1 in 5 chance of getting a rifle that needs work to simply function properly. With modern manufacturing well past the point of a 20% QC failure rate these rifles are just unacceptable to me at the moment.

I think your gut feel is wrong, since CANAM would long since have gone out of business!!!

Like many reviews you read you need to be mindful of what the bad review is for exactly and make your own assesment. Many bad reviews are total BS made by numbnuts that are to dumb to use a product correctly or whine about stupid things like a slight discoloration, bad packaging or some lame crap that really isn't a big deal. Some are accurate but you need to fish them out and be smart with what you choose to beleive or it's your loss really.

The DA i got was not perfect when i got it but i fixed the glitches in no time at all and i now have a hell of a shooter, damn glad i got it..what glitches?

Damn straight, half the people buy these 'cause they look cool but don't understand the ins and outs of the platform. There is so much information on this forum and on the net, yet by the same basic questions being asked again and again you know they did not do their home work. 90% of all questions have their answers in the stickies above.
