Looking hard at Forbes rifles right now. don't really need one but I would love to have one. use a 7mmwsm browning xbolt as my all around hunting rifle but would love to have a supper lightweight mountain rifle for chasing sheep. im a lefty and have always used right handed guns but I think its time to switch. also the forbes stocks have the cheek plate so shooting the wrong way wouldn't work too hot. they just came out in left handed bolt. also like the kimbers but they don't like leftys. looking real hard at the 07/08 just for the weight factor. also like the 25/06 but its an extra 3/4 pound. I don't like shooting at critters much past 300yrds so I hope the 07/08 will be me more than sufficient. looking at matching it with a lightweight scope but don't have one picked out. looking for some input on that. maybe a lightweight 3-9x33 with the cds dials. anyone have any experience or opinions on the forbes? what's the 07/08 capable of in the hills?

Mine is a 24B in 30-06 and having had it to the range twice it seems like it will be a good rifle.
I'm still going through the break-in procedure so I haven't made a great effort to shoot tight groups, but with the 30-06 ammo I have had kicking around it has made groups in the 1.2" to 1.3" range.
I did not have an ultralight scope to match up with it because I simply don't like the clarity of the one I have, for that reason I mounted a Burris 3X9 Fullfield on and that seems to work well so far and with that on it weighs 6lb. 6 oz.
Recoil is noticeably more than my old 9 lb.+ pre-64 '06 but thats to be expected.
Workmanship on mine is flawless, but bear in mind these are no-frills working rifles, not meant to be pretty.
Now, hopefully my lifelong dream of a sheep / goat hunt will come together in the future, if so that is what I'll carry.

Did not shoot mine yet but it is very light all dressed, just a tad under 6.5 pounds, with scope, 4 rounds, rings, sling... JP.

6lb 6oz is pretty hard to argue with in a 30-06, especially with a heavier scope on it.

I think it was 5lb. 4 oz. buck naked and when I got the 6lb. 6oz. weight it was without ammo or sling so it will still be ok to pack.

I look at it this way, I'm nearly 68 and tougher 'n boot leather but hey I'll take a light rifle when I can cause those hills aren't getting any smaller and the pack no lighter ??

I'm looking long and hard at these. Starting to save. For some reason I'm thinking 280 rather than 3006. Put a Leupold 2.5 fixed power on it. Some light but robust mounts...

I really appreciate the offer Ted, but I'm thinking maybe I'll stick with the Burris for now.
I have an M8 4X & 6X and an M7 4X I could use but they seem to have ' lazy ' windage adjustments and that makes the Burris easier to work with as it has precise clicks.
Scope or no scope I hope we can touch bases this time as I was involved with fighting my cancer last time we talked..
I'm also tempted to try a 1.5X5 Leupold on it after load development, have a soft spot for those little guys...

I dont mind the caliber, i bought this rifle especially when i am dogging deer hunting, even if i am the oldest, it is always my way of hunting, by pushing them to my boys, i get my share of kills each year, a Forbes in 30-06 weight nothing ( under 6.5 pounds all dressed), easy to carry in one hand, very important not having the rifle sling on your shoulder while dogging, i would have take a 308 but this one will do... JP.
