SKS machining quality

I would again if they were pinned in the Westrifle fashion... I did buy a really nice '56 with an original laminate stock last year. Wasn't a fan of the big chunk of steel in the mag. Sold it.

I retract my statement about Weimajack... Just received a Chinese Type 56 from him, and wow. Very nice!

On the note of machining quality. This rifle has the smoothest machine work I have ever seen on an SKS. Better than my Izzy. It is an early manufacture with the milled trigger guard. I thought all Chinese Type 56s were horrid, I guess I was proved wrong.

Did you get one of the unmarked other than serial number Chinese SKS from Weimajack? I just did as well and the finish is very nice on these. Milled trigger guard, very smooth metalwork. Haven't had a chance to take it apart yet but looks very nice...

Chinese SKS's are usually pretty nice. Better than an Izhevsk? I don't think so.

I want to buy an SKS, I got no experience with them. How can you figure they have never been issued? Are there many rifles with serials that don't match? Is it easy and cheap to do the spring-loaded firing pin mod?

Are the sellers at the store knowledgeable about them, or you have to shop around and get to know all the differences to find the good ones by yourself?

I see so many advices on here:

-avoid Yugo
-Chinese are more acurate???
-Russian the best all around, izzy being better?

I want one for the fact that ammo is cheap, rifle is cheap (200 bucks around here), the history around it...I might hunt with it, but will go the the range for sure. I have to work the paperwork out and do the courses, never owned a firearm yet.

...yeah. The Izzy was better. I'm just trying to convince myself that it was not. I sold it. Damnit!. But, I feel better knowing I can shoot the sh!t out of this Chi-com Type 56's full chrome lined barrel and chamber.

"Avoid Yugo"

No doubt this is based on 'internet speak' about how Yugoslavia has no natural reserves of chromium(?) and how they have not mastered the art and science of hard chrome plating, so therefore this explains why the bores of 59/66 rifles are not hard chromed. This is a big problem according to these people as your barrel will turn to dust as soon as you try to fire so much as one round of corrosive 7.62X39 ammo through it.

A lot of people think regular SKS rifles are heavy to begin with so it's all relative. The SKS is no Remington 700 Mountain rifle.

In all seriousness, there has never been a "bad" SKS. I prefer the Russians for sure, and I have a few to choose from!
My 1954 Tula 2008 IZH import is still my favourite of my collection. Deep Russian red stock, nice machining... and it was Weimajack's personal SKS... and you know he knows SKS's ! :)
